FHO Surgery

My dog had FHO surgery 3 weeks ago and was using the leg some at first, but now he barely uses it. He is 6 months old and wants to run around, but tries to do it with only 3 legs. Any suggestions on how to get him to use the repaired leg?

Re: FHO Surgery

Has your vet given you physio therapy exercises to do? I would think that swimming would be a good thing...you should ask if there is a local doggy rehab clinic you can talk to about getting him up and moving well again...that being said, you should also have him assessed for pain.

Re: FHO Surgery

Canine PT is a great idea. I used it many years ago after I had Glory's patellas repaired and she recovered perfectly and never limped again.

If you can find an underwater treadmill, those help a lot.

If you google "Canine Physical Therapy" or "Canine Rehab," you can find lots of facilites that will help you out. Your vet might know of some, too.

Good luck.

Re: FHO Surgery

My experience is with TPLO (both legs), not FHO, but talk to the Ortho about water therapy. It worked wonders for Duke! He did the underwater treadmill along with electrical stim and a home therapy regimen. The combination really helped rebuild his atrophied muscles. The stronger those muscles got--the more confidence he gained and the more he used that leg.

You might want to talk to a surgeon/canine PT about regular swimming. Duke was explicitly prohibited from swimming...nothing deeper than mid-thigh. The way it was explained to me was that even though swimming is weightless, the muscles used in a swim stroke are different from an "underwater walking" stroke. They said regular swimming could cause too much strain on the wrong areas of the joint. BUT...his were knee surgeries, not hip surgery, and I'm certainly no vet! Just something to ask about, perhaps.

Duke recovered 100% from both surgeries and you'd never know he has plates in both knees.

Best of luck and I hope you're able to find a canine rehab specialist. If you're in Southern WI I know a fabulous one.
