a new rescue: sick or just adjusting?

Hi everyone, I am brand new to the forum, so let me introduce myself.

My name is Becky and I am a first time dog owner with my 8 month old puppy and he's just being home over 24 hours now.

Here's what I know about Logan. He is a 8 month old aussie shepard/shelti mix. He and his two siblings were left out in the crate in their owners yard when rescued. They had fleas and heartworms. They were rescued about 4 weeks ago. He's about 25 lbs right now, but still could stand to add a few more pounds, he's a little to skinny in his hips and back spin area. Logan is a bit skittish also. Loud noises frighten him and he's quite shy when meeting new people. But I would be too if I was left in a crate to starve. He's warmed up to us really quickly. I think he can't believe someone would love him and care for him.

Here's my concern. We were told told that it didn't matter what food we were to feed him as long as it was puppy food by the humane society. Well, we fed him Nature Recipe (puppy formula) for dinner last night and I gave him a cup full. He was fine all night and went into this crate no problem. He didn't whine at all last night. But we came out to check on him in the early morning and found he threw up three times over the night. For the most part it was liquid with maybe a few chunks of food.

So we gave him a handful of Nature Recipe this morning and when my husband went to put him back in the crate he threw it all up again. We decided to call the humane society as soon as they opened to find out what food they fed him, maybe that wouldn't hurt his tummy so much.

I picked up Purina puppy chow at lunch time and came home from work to stay with him. He's been hungry the whole time. He never shies away from the food we give him. I only gave him a small handful of food to see if his tummy could handle it. For the most part he did. Twice he kinda gagged and threw up a little liquid, but nothing looking like the consistency of food.

The humane society director also told me that he had worms and to keep an eye on his poop. We have been and its been solid the whole time with no signs of worms.

He also is sleeping a ton!! This is weird for us as we have been puppy sitting my brother's chocolate lab puppy. This dog rarely takes naps and always wants to play play play! Logan and I ran around in the backyard this afternoon after dinner and we played for about 5 minutes around 5:15 and 2 hours later and he's still sleeping soundly.

He ate a handful of food at 5:15 also and has kept everything down so far.

My question is the throwing up and sleeping a stress induced thing? Is he just adjusting to being in a new consistent loving home? Could the crate be possibly stressing him out? (He has throw up when he's been out of the crate though.) Or do you think there is something else that might be causing this?

He has had a one round of shots for distemper, rabies, and kennel cough. we do need to set up a vets appointment to get him neutered and anymore shots he might need.

We are going to call the vet and the human society in the morning to get their opinions, but I thought I would get some other dog owners thoughts before hand.

Thanks in advance. Sorry for the novel

Becky

Yes, it could be adjusting, but I'd definitely be taking him to the vet. Any dog should go to a vet within a week of getting him or her. In your case, with a dog who has been having problems, it's even more important to get him in for a checkup. Let us know what the vet says.

By the way, thanks for rescuing! I'd love to see pics of your pup.

Thanks for the advice, I will be calling tomorrow as soon as they open.

He seems to be doing good, three hours keeping down food. He woke up and played with his toy and of course climbing into my lap for lots of cuddles.

I will work on pictures too!

Re: a new rescue: sick or just adjusting?

Took Logan to the vet on Tuesday. Dr. did full exam and fecal sample. She said he was healthy except for the weight he needs to gain. Vet thought the puking was just nerves and adjusting to his new home. He has kept food down for the past 3 days. He had the next set of shots and is going to be neutered on December 1st.

I am so happy and relieved that he is overall healthy puppy, especially after having fleas and internal worms.

I got the new mom syndrome where I think every sneeze is something serious, but my husband calms me down.

Thanks for the advice!!!

I am having trouble compressing pictures, so here are some that I put on facebook. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=122456

I'm glad he's doing better. What a relief! And keeping food down for three days is great.

I tried to access the album, but it wouldn't let me. I got this message:
