Dog sunburn

Do they make sunscreen for dogs? Is there another way to protect them from the sun? My dog has been outside a lot lately since the weather is nice, and it looks like he has a little sunburn on the top of his head. He has long dark fur everywhere else, but it's shorter and whiter on his head, and the skin looks a little red. I know there is not much of a chance he will wear a hat, so is there something else I can do to protect him? (Other than keeping him out of the sun - we usually don't go outside until around 5pm).

Also, does the sunburn hurt him? He doesn't seem to be uncomfortable and he's not messing with it, but I'm wondering if I should put something on it.

Re: Dog sunburn

yes they do make sunscreen for dogs.....

and think about yourself does sunburn hurt you???? dogs can get skin cancer and getting repeatedly burned is not a good idea.....

Winners circle for one makes a dog sunscreen..... you might try checking cherrybrook catalogue or Petedge catalogue for sunscreen.... I know that with insect repellant You can use a childrens spray insect repellant on your dogs.... I am not sure if the same is true for sunscreen maybe someone else knows if you can use a childrens spray sunscreen.... however... regardless I have bought sunscreen spray from cherrybrook ......

Re: Dog sunburn

I would definitely look into a sunscreen product for your dog. Sorry I don't have any recommendations, but I do know pet sunburns can be dangerous. I had a cat that spent alot of time outdoors as a child, and the cat developed skin cancer, had to have her ears amputated, and died from further spreading of the cancer at age 6.

Re: Dog sunburn

You should be fine using your average run of the mill sunscreen (unsecnted, un colored, etc..). We use regular human sunscreen for the horses at school in the summer time. Most of the horses are grey arabs and are very prone to getting sunburn on their noses.
