My dog licks his butt...

Apologies, this is a little gross. Our male, neutered rescue schnoodle is a bit over a year old. When we brought him home a few months ago, we took him to the vet (of course), and he was given a clean bill of health. But here's the thing... he really likes licking his butt (or the base of his tail). He doesn't scoot, and his poops are intact, healthy, and regular-- no sign of worms (and he was tested at the vet before, and hasn't eaten anything that could give him worms). I thought it might be anal glands, so we took him to have them expressed. The vet said they weren't that bad, but she expressed them anyway since we were there. She also did a quick check on the area, and pronounced him healthy. That second vet trip was about a month or five weeks ago, and Mac still does it. I'm wondering if this is just a weird neurosis/habit that he's picked up? When we see him do it, we tell him no-no, and redirect him. He doesn't do it *constantly*, but definitely more than any other dog I've owned or known.

Re: My dog licks his butt...

Before deciding your dog's problem is behavioral, I would discuss the possibility of a perianal fistula(s). I found some information on this condition and they are described as deep fissures around the pink inner portion of the rectum that eventually lead to small abscesses. I think your dog might be on the young side but it is not beyond the realm of possibility so make sure your vet has ruled this out. From what I read, your vet should do a very thorough examination of the rectum which could require anesthesia to find the little buggers.
