Is eye discharge a hazard?

I have a Havanese/ Wheaton Terrier mix. This breed typically has some eye discharge (might be the same as "staining"). I have read tips for removing it, but my dog squirms a lot and doesnt like me touching so close to his eyes. Do I really *need* to remove it? It forms little crusty chunks that eventually come off anyway. It doesnt bother me aesthetically. Am I supposed to remove it for some sort of health reason or do people just remove it because they dont like the way it looks?

thanks,
~Dan

Re: Is eye discharge a hazard?

I have a Maltese that doesn't like his eyes messed with either. He gets crusty balls at the corner of his eyes which I prefer to remove for the purpose of good hygiene. We do a little bit of battle and I usually walk away the victor. Our vet did tell us we should keep the eyes clean of debris.

after the eye area is cleaned you can put a little vaseline under them so it's easier to wipe off next time
