Dogs with cancer

This article talks about a treatment for dogs with cancer that has been effective: 60% of the dogs treated had their tumors shrink, disappear or stop growing. I don't know much about the treatment, but wanted to let you all know in case any of your pets are battling this awful disease. I know it's an awful situation and if you can do anything to save your pet, most of you would, so I thought I'd share.

Here's more info and a link to the article where I found it:
"Pfizer Animal Health recently began distribution of Palladia, a cancer fighting medication just for dogs, after obtaining FDA approval in June. Palladia is designed to be used in the treatment of mast cell tumors, which are the second most common form of tumors in dogs, according to Pfizer. There are 1.2 million cases of canine cancer in the US each year.

Clnical trials for FDA approval showed that 60% of the dogs treated with Palladia had their tumors shrink, disappear or stop growing."

Take care.

Re: Dogs with cancer

Our dog Oreo passed almost 2 years ago with cancer. Exactly one year before that she was diagnosed with a grade 2 mast cell tumor in her chest. Surgery couldn't remove it all cause it was around her windpipe. That last year the cancer progressed but she was a real trooper. Still very active & happy until the last couple of days.

She was the best dog ever. It's great there is better treatment - cancer is devastating...

Re: Dogs with cancer

Yep...Sad to say, cancer is very common in dogs...About 25% of older dogs die from some form of cancer.

My pit bull, Toby, passed away this past March from cancer.
He was almost 8 years old.

I noticed a small tumor on his leg one day, and we got him to the vet right away, but the tumor was malignant and it had already mestasticized to his lungs.

I hate cancer--it is a devastating and cruel disease...It took my father and it also took the sweetest dog I have ever known...

However, I'm very happy to hear about this new treatment that will no doubt give hope to a lot of dogs.

Re: Dogs with cancer

Oreo was the same - almost 8 years old when it appeared in the front of her chest. We have no idea why she got it - she was the perfect dog, very healthy, happy, active... with the sweetest personality.

Here's her story if anyone is interested in reading it. She absolutely loved rabbit hunting.

Cancer can appear in any animal, just like in humans.
