Phenobarbital cause of excessive defecation?

Hi:

My jack russell terrier has been on phenobarb for siezures and he did exhibit several of the common side effects, including excessive urination, that have diminished.

BUT, he continues to poop in the house even a minute after being taken outside to poop (we don't want no doggie door). This happens about every other day.

Anyone with a dog who has seizures ever experience this sort of problem?

Thanks!

Re: Phenobarbital cause of excessive defecation?

my Cuinn who has been on phenobarb and potassium bromide for 2.5 years now has not exhibited the kinds of problems that you are talking about there have been other side effects but he has not regressed in housebreaking....

there is an excellent website for epi-dogs http://www.canine-epilepsy.com/

there are a great many very knowledgeable folks on the listserve and the website itself has a wealth of information.... I would strongly encourage you to check it out....

I also commend you for learning about epilepsy in dogs and doing what is best for your guy.

Re: Phenobarbital cause of excessive defecation?

has your dogs food been changed recently? i have never experienced this problem with that drug before. our pitbull takes it.

has the dog been on antibiotic, changed food, eaten something that may have been off a bit, ex: lunch meat. i have a baby safety lock on our fridge to keep our old fat pit bull out of it. He and my german shepherd bearla will pig out if he can get the door open and one day ate something that was a bit off and destined for the garden.

Same food and only a couple of dog treats per day, another reason this is so strange.

Since your post, Rocky is better contolling his bowels. It took a month for his personality to come back after the last cluster of siezures, so maybe some of his systems were out of wack too.
