possible allergy?

Arff has had some chronic ear inflammation since we got him back in June. He's been on some different drops, and just last month the vet put him on a 7-day course of antibiotics as well as antibiotic ear drops. She said if this didn't clear it up we'd have to look at a possible food allergy as that is often the cause of chronic ear inflammation in young dogs (Arff is almost 11 months).
Well, he was fine for about a week-10 days after the antibiotics, but over the weekend he started shaking his head and scratching at his ears again. Doesn't really seem like it's severe and it hasn't slowed him down one bit, but obviously the meds didn't help.
We have a vet appointment on Thursday to recheck his ears and talk about where to go from here. If it is an allergy, how do we find out what he is allergic to? Is there an allergy test the vet can do, or do we have to just do a trial-and-error kind of thing? What are dogs most commonly allergic to?
I'm thinking it might be peanut butter -- last night I gave him a peanut butter flavored Better Than Ears and right after he ate it he started rubbing his face on the couch, which is something the vet told us to watch for. I will be so sad if that's what it is -- peanut butter is his most favorite thing in the world.
ETA -- he eats Iams Lamb and Rice. Also, when the vet looks in his ears, she says there is no discharge/debris, but they do look mildly inflamed.
