Dogs traumatic experience

My dad was walking my dog, a 2 year old boston terrier, while they were walking my dad was hit by a car. The dog was unharmed and my dad has some muscle damage. Ever since the accident (2 weeks ago) my dog will not walk on a leash, something he used to love to do; now when I put the leash on him and get him out the door he will not move, he sits and shakes, and will not budge. It is heartbreaking, what should I do

Re: Dogs traumatic experience

You need to reintroduce walking outside to him slowly, and in stages, making sure it's super awesome for him the whole time. Treats, praise, toys, anything that makes him view it positively. I'd spend a week or so just putting him on leash a few times a day and sitting on the porch and giving him treats or playing with a toy. Not trying to go anywhere, just chilling. Then when he gets excited over the leash again (and he will, given some time and consistency), then I'd move to the drive way and repeat until he seems excited about that, then maybe do some short walks to the end of the drive, giving him treats or stopping to play with a toy every couple feet, then move to walking down to the end of the block and back. Just make sure to move as slow as he needs to move and don't rush him. More negative association will only set back the progress.

Re: Dogs traumatic experience

What a horrible experience for them both!! Will he walk on the leash inside? I'd play around inside first to get him to relax. His favorite snacks might help break the ice as well. Is there a quiet place you can go - without traffic maybe a park where he can sniff around and forget about the leash.

Good Luck!

Re: Dogs traumatic experience

hey, dogs are meant to go on walks, so with enough time and encouragement, the dog will surely love walking again. Good luck!

Re: Dogs traumatic experience

I'm so sorry to hear about this but glad no one was seriously injured (at least physically).

Fear is a funny thing and dogs tend to associate things pretty immediately with traumatic experiences.
I suggest you check out www.fearfuldogs.com for some really good tips on conditioning your pup to get back out in the world.
