Hip/Elbow scoring

Has anyone had their dogs' hips/elbow scored? How long in advance do you need to set up an appointment? how much does it cost? My vet only recommended one place, but I would like to look at a few places, is there somewhere that I could find out about the different places that do it? Do you have any recommendations, suggestions or advice?

Thank you!

Re: Hip/Elbow scoring

By scoring, I take it you mean x-rays and then one of the different certifications possible?

I had Kit's elbows/knees/hips x-rayed last month because I wanted to make sure she's ok to do agility/frisbee at a competition level. I had no interest in certifying her or getting a score, because she's a mutt and she's spayed.

I set up the appt about 2 months in advance. They sedated her and then reversed it afterwards. They kept her all day, and she was still groggy when I picked her up. It isn't cheap no matter where you do it, but check around with different vets for the best pricing. I got quotes from about $250 to about $500. Ideally you're looking for someone who really knows how to do it, because if done badly, it won't tell you a thing. An orthopedic specialist would be best, if you can find one. You can read more about proper positioning here: http://leerburg.com/hipart.htm Stay away from any vet who says they can do it without the sedation - they can't.

Can I ask why you're interested in having this done?

Re: Hip/Elbow scoring

Its part of my breeder's health guarentee. More or less, the breed club is trying to weed out the bad lines for hips, the elbows are something new to test. I am not sure if I NEED to do it, but as long as I am doing one, might as well do the other.
