| Re: Glucosamine for arthritis I give Alvin glucosamine and chondroitin with MSM. I believe I can tell the difference in his level of stiffness when he takes it every day versus when I run out and don't replace it immediately. Of course, I could just be seeing what I want to see!
Downside: cost. I get my supplements at Costco, so it's better than the pet store, but it still costs more than if I weren't giving him supplements at all. |

| Re: Glucosamine for arthritis I give it to Kechara as a preventitive, and I give it to Jack as a treatment. I can't say if it's working on Kechara but Jacks arthitus hasn't gotten worse. |

| Re: Glucosamine for arthritis I give my dogs 50/50 Pet Revitalizer. It's a combination of elk antler velvet and dried elk liver. Antler velvet is a natural source of Glucosamine, Chondroitin Sulfate and MSM. It's made more available by the amino acids and iron in the liver. I believe natures sources are always best.
They don't have arthritis, we just give it to them for general health and athletic performance.

| Re: Glucosamine for arthritis I give all my dogs over 6 glucosamine. I get it at wal mart in the vitamin section. Liquid for people actually with chondroitin (sp) and msm as well. 2 tablespoons daily and even my worst arthritic dog can jump on the couch and do stairs but he can't when he's off it. Liquid is definately better than tablets and make sure its at least 500 mcg of each. Double dose your first 2 weeks to get it inthe system then go to a single dose daily for maintenance. The bottle we get at wal mart lasts us a month using 2 tablespoons a day and costs about $12.00 |

| Re: Glucosamine for arthritis Does anyone have a Double blind study showing the effectiveness, effective dose level etc. for this product?
I have to say I have not seen any studies.
I used it on horses years ago and all I noted was a decrease in the money in my wallet.. no change in the horses (and it is given for both arthritis and for hoof quality). |

| Re: Glucosamine for arthritis I think it's important to note that all glucosamine products are not equal and all bodies do not react the same. The liquid glucosamine that we use has a full 1500 mg of glucosamine per dose. The liquid is easy to give to our dogs (just pour it on their food) and it is better absorbed than pills
In dogs with moderate to bad arthritis, owners usually see a big difference in their activity levels and behavior within a short period of time after using it.
It really made a huge difference in our old dog Storm and without the dangerous side-effects of many prescription meds. In fact, the vet suggested using aspirin for Storm at first. It did work for while...until he developed a very severe intestinal infection from it.
It's an individual decision. But I can tell you for our older dogs - especially the ones with severe arthritis - it really made a significant difference in their quality of life.

| Re: Glucosamine for arthritis it normally helps for when they start to get older, but instead of buying pills for them they are some dog foods out there have have glucosamine in it already, so you would be saving money by just finding a food that has glucosamin in it already, such as eagle holistic, innova, and pure vita |

| Re: Glucosamine for arthritis I am not arguing with anecdotal testimonials. I am not saying the stuff doesn't work on some dogs or a dog.. I am saying it was money down the drain (also anecdotal BTW) on my horses which are not dogs.
I am asking for any science to back it up... a double blind repeatable study. Since you sell the Stuff Kay W. do you have any links to any science... hard science.. (University Studies, Private studies etc. etc.) that have been published in a recongnized journal that supports the anecdotal testimonials.
If not, that is OK. I have found none but I may not have the access a vendor has.
Thanks!
PS: There was a report of a study done in humans that showed there was no physical change in humans but there was a strong placebo effect.
Of course a dog would not have any placebo effect so a study using dogs might be very elucidating.

I know that for people and dogs - the benefits can vary in each case. And there is research that goes both ways depending on who is doing the research and why. I would imagine horses would be the same way.
If you do a search on google for "glucosamine research on horses" there are149,000 results. It's just a matter of wading through it all to find what you are looking for. |

| Re: Glucosamine for arthritis I meant studies for dogs, not horses.. as this is a DF and the product you sell is for dogs.
Sorry. I should have been more clear.
I can do such a search but as a vendor I thought you might have links etc.
Again.. sorry for the mix up and I do appreciate any Scientific information in this area you can provide either as curative or preventative. I am aware of the anecdotal discussions.
Thanks!! |

| Re: Glucosamine for arthritis I feed all my guys chicken feet instead of dog biscuits. They're a natural source of glucosamine. If it works or not I really couldn't say. None of my guys have ever had arthritis. Hmmmm, maybe that's testimony in itself.

Whatever works! | I buy the chicken feet at an HEB, a grocery chain in Texas. I've heard many ethnic markets sell them also.
My guys love them. It took me a minute to get over the yuck factor in feeding them. They crunch and it does look awfully strange to see a toe hanging out of the corner of a dog's mouth.
