| Phoebe has worms again, what are the best remedies? We're going to the Vet tomorrow morning for a de-wormer Rx, I was wondering what others do about worms. Do you just go the the Vet when your dog shows symptoms? Do you use a monthly or semi-yearly medication regardless of symptoms? Do you use natural or herbal remedies? What do you do for heartworm or other specific types of parasites? |

| Re: Phoebe has worms again, what are the best remedies? My pup has had "chronic" worms for almost 2 months. First she had cocidia and then hookworms. My vet gave her a dose at the practice and then gave me the second to administer a week later. We assumed they were all gone and went back to the vet 3 weeks later for her shots. The fecal exam came back horrible! They had multiplied again. She was given another dosage and one for a week later. Then what I did was after the second dosage wait a week and then take again for a fecal. She had two worms in the sample. She got another dose, and I just gave the second yesterday afternoon. My suggestion is just keep taking your dog to the vet week after week until they are completely gone. Next Wednesday, Lexi will have another fecal test, hopefully, she will finally be clean.
They also sell products at Petsmart and such that you administer every 6 months, supposed to be a preventative or something. I haven't looked too much into it yet, since I'm just trying to get rid of the current ones. I also don't let her get her nose into ANYTHING while she is outside. She actually ate some other dog's poop one night outside and I was going crazy that it could have been full of worms but that was right before the visit where the vet only found two worms so I guess that poop was "clean" Lol, what a scare that was.
Anyways, good luck, worms can be so annoying to get rid of, but it's really a good feeling when the vet says they are almost gone! |

| Re: Phoebe has worms again, what are the best remedies? We give the dogs Heartgard Plus monthly. It protects against heartworms, roundworms, and hookworms. Pretty much all but tapeworms. |

| Re: Phoebe has worms again, what are the best remedies? Heartguard monthly and yearly vet check ups. Check for a bloated belly too.
Our dog had a hard time getting rid of Girardia (SP) but after 4 fecal exams and meds from the vet its gone. |

| Re: Phoebe has worms again, what are the best remedies? We give Interceptor once a month because it also covers whipworms which are impossible to eradicate from soil |

| Re: Phoebe has worms again, what are the best remedies? According to Pitcairn, roundworms prevention can work in mature dogs with sufficient Vitamin A. Wormseed can be given 3 times a day for 3 weeks. Also, adding wheat or oat bran can help carry out the worms.
Turnips, carrots and beets can provide enough Vitamin A and supplementing with garlic and food grade diatomaceous earth can work for roundworms. For hookworms, he recommends using conventional treatment first then continuing with the homeopathic treatment to tie up loose ends.
I'm not a big fan of conventional flea or heartworm medication, but I also live in an area where heartworm is not that big of a deal. If you're in a warm, humid climate, definitely use heartworm medication. Otherwise, holistic remedies should work fine. |
