discoid lupus

my friend's dog just got a diagnosis of discoid lupus. they are treating with cortisone and antibiotics for a week. her dog's ears and around his eyes are very sore, raw, crusty, itchy. they are also treating with omegas (3&6) and vitamin E as a first step. if this doesn't have any effects they will go to a herbal remedy before steroids. her vet is holistic and suggested that if the omegas and vit E don't work she still has a few tricks up her sleeve before the meds.

do any of you have a dog with this condition? can you share any advice? she is going to put sun screen on the dog when he goes out from now on.

thanks for any advice.
