| My spayed bitch is in season! Hi,
I was wondering if anyone can offer my any advice for my litle springer girl, I spayed her 8 months ago. Despite that, dogs still go crazy for her as though she was in season all the time!
I can't walk her near any male dogs as they fuss and try to mount her if i don't stop them, it's driving me crazy!
I'm meant to be going on a charity walk soon with my two bitches and a friend with 1 bitch, 1 castrated male and an entire male, and I'm worried he's going to fuss and upset her (his owner will never put him on a lead!). She's a shy girl and gets scared and upset, but I don't want to keep her isolated forever, plus walking her is a nightmare!
Any advice would be appreciated, my vet is stumped!
Thanx, Clare |

| Re: My spayed bitch is in season! It sounds like the male dogs are dominant types. They are probably mounting other males as well.
Esther was spayed the day after we got her but, every once in a while, a male will try to mount her. She's neither shy nor submissive, so they only do it once.
The problem is with the males and their owners, not with you and your springer. |

Thanx, Clare | Well I am assuming you have checked her for a Urinary tract infection or another type of vaginal infection as that can change her scent and cause the other dogs to go nuts over her. Also if she recently had a bath or you put antyhing in her coat, the other dogs can misinterpret that......
Finally if she is a submissive female the other dogs could be sensing that and remember humping and mounting is most often dominant behavior and not sexual.... so that is the other part of that....
I would have her checked for an infection.....

Thanks for the replies :-)
She's been checked for infections by the vet :-( wish she would be like RonE's Esther an tell the boys off!
The behaviour is definately sexual, they spend ages peeing around her and with their noses glued to her vulva, which is swollen, and will then try to mount if i don't grab her.
They run in from everywhere! Don't know how they can locate her as I used to walk her in 3 fields, they would run in from 2 fields away to get to her, i had to stop walking her there in the end as other walkers just let their dogs chase her and thought it was funny! |

| Re: My spayed bitch is in season! If she is definitely swollen but has been spayed then my understanding is that if the spay is not done correctly she could have some physical symptoms of a heat cycle.... I would probably talk to a reproductive vet...... http://www.caillouxcavaliers.com/repro.htm
here is a good list of repro vets throughout the states.
good luck |

Thanks so much for your help, hopefully they'll have the answer! It's great to be able to talk to other dog owners about canine problems :-)

| Re: My spayed bitch is in season! A friend of mine has a female who had an incomplete spay, and is currently going through tests to determine exactly what's going on with her. If your current vet is the one who did the spay, you may have a hard time getting them to test her and may need a second opinion, but there are blood and hormone tests to prove whether or not she had an incomplete spay. |
