| Brother is worried about dogs help if you can My brother came home from going out to eat and found that his two German Shorthaired dogs were both sick and throwing up. They had gotten into a fern plant. Specifically he said it was a pineapple fern. Should he be worried or what should he do? |

| Re: Brother is worried about dogs help if you can If they are throwing up and acting sick I would bring the dogs into the vet right away. |

| Re: Brother is worried about dogs help if you can I would call the emergency vet, tell them what happened and ask if you should induce vomiting (sometimes you should, sometimes you shouldn't - it all depends on what they've gotten into). Ask if you should bring them in. If the dogs were mine, I would be at the vets already. |

| Re: Brother is worried about dogs help if you can Need advice fast, my brother went to the vet. He needs alternative suggestions. The dogs got into a Sago palm plant the vet says that it will cost $2,500 per dog so $5,000 which my brother doesn't have. Anybody have some suggestions? |

| Re: Brother is worried about dogs help if you can Ask the Vet to work out a payment plan or ask the vet if there is ANYTHING you can do as a home treatment to bring the cost down. |

| Re: Brother is worried about dogs help if you can Have you heard of anything to give a dog to help nutrilize the poisons of a plant?
The Vet said even if he did anything he would only give him a 50/50 chance of living and my brother doesn't have the kind of money to give on a chance.

| Re: Brother is worried about dogs help if you can Thanks I'm frantically searching on line for him now.
Just got word he brought them back to the vet and was able to get the vet to do charcoal blood work and IVs for both dogs if he paid a $1000 now so they are at the vet for the night. I pray they are part of 50% chance that makes it.

What is charcoal bloodwork? I've never heard of it before. |

| Re: Brother is worried about dogs help if you can I think the OP meant the vet will give them activated charcoal to absorb the toxins and do blood work as well to check for levels of everything.
I don't think there's such a thing as charcoal blood work. |

| Re: Brother is worried about dogs help if you can oh well, he could have done the charcoal himself, then, if that is supposed to work on cases like this.?
We keep AC around all of the time - it's very useful, for both dogs and people. |

| Re: Brother is worried about dogs help if you can Yeah he probably could've done it himself. The problem is he doesn't know what in teh plants is causing toxicity in the dogs. There are probably times where AC shouldn't be used. I don't know if he phoned the vet and asked for instructions and dosage for AC then he probably could've done it.
OP, please let us know if the dogs are doing ok if you get any news! |

The Sago palm plant is VERY poisonous to dogs and are everywhere down south. Even a tiny amount can kill, I've read many horror stories about dogs that ingested very little and didn't make it...
