new dx for Muggsy/lots of questions?

Hi,
After 2 weeks, multiple vets & misdiagnoses, one day in the ER & 3 days in the hospital, we hopefully have received the correct dx & treatment plan for Muggsy.
They say he has acute bacterial prostatitis from pseudomonas something or other. After the laundry list of meds he received for the other dx, here is what I am supposed to give him now:
Metronidazole 250 mg 2x a day
Zeniquin 100 mg 1x
Deramaxx 37.5 mg 1x
Ultram 25 mg 3x
Pepcid 10mg 2x

He's never been on meds before (he's going to be 6 at the end of Nov) & I'm concerned about what to try to feed him to help him tolerate these the best he can. Since coming home last night, he's only been interested in eating boiled chicken breast. I'm going to boil some beef & mix it with rice too. He turned down wet food, scrambled eggs, cheese, cottage cheese...He's drinking very little (mixed pedialyte in his water), so I know if he keeps that up I'll have to bring him back to the vet, at least get some subcutaneous fluids.
We took him to the ER 5 am Sun. When they closed at 7:30 am Mon, I took him to his most recent vet. There is a long story there, but anyway....I asked if there was anyone on shift overnight & the vet said no! I was shocked. His vet clinic in Miami had techs on site 24/7. I asked her how they can leave a sick dog ON AN IV alone from 8-10 pm until 8 am. She said it's never been a problem. Whatever. Unfortunately at that point, this was the best place for him as they had a history with him. I called 2 other animal hospitals, and can you believe they had no one on staff overnight also? It was a loooong night for me....Tues afternoon we closed our place & went to go visit him. He was all out of it & so sad looking. He wasn't eating or drinking. My husband grilled the office manager about the whole no staff on site at night thing, so I think we became the squeaky wheels at that point. Wed am I called first thing (squeaksqueak) to check on him & found out he had chewed his IV out during the night. Words can not express On the upside, they got the culture results & started him on oral meds (even though he had not eaten or drank since Sat night) & released him that afternoon after only one round of meds. They didn't even give us the printout explaining all the meds the way they usually do. (The vet told us this) My husband says I'm paranoid, but I think they just kicked him loose so fast because of the stink we made, especially after he CHEWED OUT HIS IV. Sorry, but good lord that gets me, thinking about him all alone ....gah.
Anyway, the vet is finally open so it's time for me to call & ask about proper administration of the meds, which I should've found out yesterday, if I'd been thinking straight & wasn't getting the bum's rush out the door.
So here are the questions.
At this point would it be better to stick with this vet clinic until he's better or try to find a better vet? (this is the clinic who misdiagnosed him from the get go, a tech gave me the wrong results, told me he had a UTI when he didn't)
Sadly, out of the 3 other vet clinics I've tried, this was the best of the bunch.
I do intend to keep looking, but for now?
Any tips on what to feed him...yogurt? probiotics?... to help him tolerate all those pills & maybe how to get him to eat would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry this post was so long. It could've been longer

Wow. Poor little guy. I am glad they found out what was wrong.
Here is some info on bacterial prostatis (yes it is commonly diagnosed as UTI as the bacteria also shows up in urine and the symptoms are similar..the prostate wraps around the urethra, so when it swells it affects urine production and can also affect bowel movements).

I find Pill Pockets to be very helpful for medication dosing. Pseudomonas is a tough bacteria and the treatment needs to go on for a good month or more, with reculturing to make sure it is gone. He will really need the deramaxx for pain as this is a very painful illness, you may find his appetite reappears once the pain is under control.

As for the vet not having overnight staff, many, if not most, smaller practices do not have overnight staff. When I worked at the vet we had any stable cases stay over without issues but anyone who was unstable or who was an IV eater (and you don't know this til it happens) went to the Evet overnight. Smaller practices just do not have the resources to have overnight staff, though I have seen vets who live nearby do night checks if they weren't sure about the status of the animal.

I hope you get all the info you need and that your pup feels better soon.

Liverwurst/Braunchwager works for my dogs. Because it is soft and sticky it is easy to get the pills to stay in it. Dogs seem to love it. Give a piece or 2 w/o a pill, then one with and another right away w/o, so they are already swallowing the one w/the pill so they can get the one w/o.

I'd suggest calling the State Veterinary Board and asking if each vet (by name) in your area has any complaints or disciplinary actions taken against them. They will only tell you about those where the Vet board themselves investigated and found them negligent, so if there was a complaint, find a new vet.

Looks like this vet has everything pretty well covered.

Metronidazole http://www.wedgewoodpharmacy.com/mon...ronidazole.asp should settle his intestinal tract.
Zeniquin http://www.pfizerah.com/product_over...=EN&species=CN for the infection.
Deramax for the inflammation and pain relief.
Ultram for pain relief.
Pepcid to coat and protect his stomach.

As he starts to feel better he will want to eat. Many dogs have a poor appetite when in pain. Hope your pup feels better soon!
