Post-Neuter Problem

Hello..

I am hoping someone here can give me some advice. I got my male mini schnauzer Gus neutered last Thursday. I brought him home that afternoon and he stayed quiet and calm for the next two days. The problem is that my female Westie is in heat. I've been keeping them separated or closely supervised for the last week, but now she's to the point where she's willing. When I woke up this morning I checked Gus's incision and freaked out. Two giant balls had appeared right on either side of the incision..not where balls are supposed to be. After some googling I've decided that he had an erection. I am terrified that he is going to pop his incision right open.

My female, Aggie, is crate trained, so it's easy to keep her away from Gus..but apparently being separated by a plastic crate does nothing to deter Gus's..urges..and short of trying to dump one of them off on a family member, I cannot get them any farther apart. If I weren't worried about infections and pokey sticks I'd leave Gus outside for a while. And I do need to leave the house today and do some work.

I guess what I'm wondering is if anyone has experienced a shortly-post-neuter erection getting dog, and if the stitches will survive such a thing..? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Or..feel free to go ahead and tell me if I'm crazy and I worry too much.

Also, while I'm here, I was wondering if anyone had an opinion on Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul dry adult kibble. I just love reading the ingredient list, it all sounds wonderful..but with it being so cheap..and Diamond being of questionable quality..I'm starting to wonder. I can't afford super pricey food for the two, but is this Chicken Soup giving me a false sense of feeding my dogs well?

TIA

Re: Post-Neuter Problem

I feel for you! My bitch was in season when I brought home an unaltered male rescue. He was immediately neutered, but we ended up having to give him valium, so that he could rest and recover!

Chicken Soup is a good food. Go for it!

Re: Post-Neuter Problem

and there is still semen there .... it takes several months for the hormones to stabilize and at this time with it being such a short time you can still have an accidental litter.... and it is likely that your dog is indeed responding to the fact that your girl is in season.....

keep them apart when she is season for the entire season and also know that even after the time it takes for your boys hormones to stabilize a neutered dog can still have a tie even though he will be shooting blanks.

also keep in mind that unspayed females run a high risk of a often fatal uterine infection called pyometra..... as well as an increased risk of mammary tumours....
