Spaying Nightmare... Advice needed

Hi,

I'm a brand new member and am sick with worry right now. We have an 8 month old Collie named Suki. She is our first dog. We had her spayed about 10 days ago. She had about a 4 inch incision. We kept the cone collar on her 100% of the time, but between her 'enthusiasm' and her begin able to get at it with her back foot, she opened the incision up... all the way... it was awful. We got her to the hospital within a half hour and she had emergency surgery. She is okay but now has a HUGE incision and we are sick with worry that this will happen again. The vets were somewhat helpful about advice and she is on a sedative to help keep her calm. We still have the collar on her, obviously, and also put a t-shirt on her like a person, and knotted it at her behind. We then gently wrapped a gauze around her belly... not tight at all. Is there anything else we can do? I have been on and off the verge of tears, and have a knot in my stomach from worry. The surgery was very expensive and we didn't have the money, but made it work. I'm sorry to ramble, but I am just petrified right now. I'm attaching a few pics of her... she is such a beauty. Thanks for reading, and any advice would be great, as my wife and I just feel lost.

Gary

Watch her carefully, otherwise you should be fine.

She's a cutie pie! Love the eyes. I have a sable merle with two blue eyes, they are fun, for sure.

The t-shirt idea is a good one.

I would just keep an eye on her 24/7 and call the vet if anything else happens. I'm sure she'll be okay!

You guys have a beautiful dog with you! Good luck!!

I wouldn't worry too much.

Dog's skin isn't really attached to them like a persons. Incisions and cuts look a lot worse than they are for that reason.

It sounds like your doing the right thing with sedatives and binding it with a T-shirt. Maybe you could use a bandage or something.

I had a dog who jumped chain link fences all the time, once she misjudged and the pointy sharp spikes on top caught her belly and made 3 slices about 10 inches long. Scared me to death as I saw it happen and grabbed her up and rushed her in to the vet.

It wasn't as bad as it looked, and it looked really bad to me, and she healed up just fine and you couldn't even tell in a few months.

It sounds like if you could have gotten her through a few more days all would have been well, just do what you can to get her to leave it alone this time.

Get a large size of panty hose, the support kind.

Cut off a leg. Cut the toe end off and make it of a length to cover her abdomen and incision. Cut holes for her legs, and put her in it.

It will fit snug, hold her incision closed, and then put the t shirt over the top of it.

Get well soon, Suki.

If she'll tolerate it you can get a pair of baby socks and use some sport tape to keep the socks on her feet. Use the sport tape just above the hock (heel) so that there's no chance of slippage and possibly also take her to a groomer and have her rear claws dremmled down really short. The other things with the tee shirt sound good too.

I have nothing to add to the other suggestions here. I just wanted to pop in real quick to say what a gorgeous girl you have.
