tulip bulbs

I just got a call from my sister. She was mad because one of our dogs (probably Mia, she is the one who gets into things) ate her tulip bulbs. I wasn't too worried, but decided to look it up and see if they are toxic. Well, yes, they are and the bulbs are, of course, the worst part. So I called my sister and asked her how many she ate. I expected it to just be a few. She said she had about 35 and they are almost all gone. So Mia ate 30 tulip bulbs.

My sister checked the yard to see if she had just chewed them up but couldn't find any in the yard. Mia threw up two big piles of liquid and bulb pieces. I called the vet, he said it is good that she is vomiting (getting them out of her system) and to offer her bread and milk and to keep her hydrated. We are going to keep an eye on her and I have the vet's cell number and a pet poison helpline number at the ready.

So far, Mia is acting normal, running around like her crazy self. I really hope she is ok. I wish I was home and not 100 miles away at school so I could take care of my baby.

Re: tulip bulbs

My general rule on plants is, if I won't eat it then my dog shouldn't eat it. The prettier it is the more toxic it tends to be.

Re: tulip bulbs

Hmm, a long time ago when there was a famine in Holland, they survived by eating the tulip bulbs.....so they can't be too toxic? Or maybe they're not toxic if cooked or something.

Hope it all works out for Mia!
