I'm thinking of putting my dog on heartworm preventative medication. Does anyone do this? Or do you think it's overkill?

If you have mosquitoes then IMO, yur dog should be on heartworm preventative. The disease can kill and treatment is long and expensive.

Some people who live in areas with hard winter freezes take their dogs off meds over the winter and start again int he spring. However, often the test to verify that your dog is still negative before starting meds in the spring is more expensive than just keeping the dog on meds all winter.

My girls use heartguard, and i plan to keep them on it all winter because it also kills intestinal worms.. and, well, since my girls have a thing about rabbit poop.. I think it's a good idea :P

I, too, use a heartworm medication all year long. I use Interceptor and have not had any problems using it. I like the fact that it kills intestinal parasites.
