What tests have the vets done? Skin scrapes? Cultures? What were the results ? What treatments have been given?

Is the dog always licking the irritation? Or does it almost go un-noticed to the dog?

Re: 5 month puppy with bad skin irritations.

Ask the vet to do a skin culture for ringworm to eliminate that as well as any bacterial infections that may be localized. IF it's loacalized demodex, it may not show up in a scrape, and it's a very easy treatment. Ringworm however is very contagious and will need extensive treatemnt with fungicides and you'll need to treat the entire house as well as all other warm blooded beings in your house (human, canine, feline and birds). If it's bacterial, a course of antibiotics should clear it up fairly quickly. If your current vet isn't getting the job done, then by all means, find another (just stay away from 'chain vets' as they often overcharge for services)

The problem could also be environmental or food allergies. You may end up having to test for them, too.

What kind of shampoo and conditioner are you using? And brush? I would recommend a high quality dog shampoo and conditioner of a type specifically formulated for skin problems, such as those made by Eqyss or Nature's Specialties, and a Zoom Groom curry.

Is he a blue? Dilute coat colors can have health issues.

yes the dog tries to lick it. he can only get to some parts of it with his mouth , then he will try and scratch at it with his foot.
