ticks & heartworm medication - how long..

do you feed these med? I have been giving heart worm med since we had my beagle, but I read the carrying agent is "Mosquitoes" which usually come out during summer. So is ticks. Do you actually need to give medication during off season? I would appreciate your opinion.

We give it year round. From what I understand, there are areas of the country where you can stop during the winter months. Not sure where you are...The American Heartworm Society posts their recommendations on their site.

My vet recommends staying on year round. If you do go off it during the winter months, most vets require you to have a heartworm test before starting again.

Think of that test as your own little insurance policy for Becky. If your pet was tested negative, is on preventative, and develops heartworm while taking the preventative, the manufacturer very often covers treatment costs.

For smaller sized dogs especially, it's often cost effective to stay on it year round rather than retest every spring. Also, most heartworm preventatives also work against several intestinal parasites, so it's not just skeeters you're protected from.

(Lorina, you changed your avatar, cute hahahah)

Thank you so much for your opinions. Yeah it might be better off put them on year around to be safe side. I learned new thing once again today.
Life is continuous journey of learning. I am so grateful. Have a dry day.
It's kinda yucky and is about to shower or rain in St Louis,MO area.
