Peke Neutered... Now Infected

I had my Peke neutered on Tuesday, and the suture became infected. We took him back to our vet on Thursday and she prescribed Antirobe (antibiotic) and Rimadyl (pain med). It is Sunday night, and he is sill very lethargic, is breathing heavy and the inside of his hind legs are swollen and tender to the touch (I'm guessing, since he gives me the Peke snort and bites). Has anyone else had this problem, and what suggestions do you have? I wasn't concerned for the last 2 days because he is eating/drinking/passing normally, but his energy is extremely diminished.

Honestly I haven't had this happen with my dog, but my cat (female) also got infected after her spay. They prescribed is antibiotics and stuff too, they also have us an E Collar for her so she wouldn't lick at it. She was also pretty lethargic and didn't want to play at all so I think that it's fairly normal as he must be in some pain and it's just plain uncomfortable having an infection...especially where it is. If you are really concerned I'd call the vet and make sure it is normal, but my opinion is that the meds and the infection are just making him feel uncomfortable and groggy.

I am so sorry you are going through this--would warm soaks help the infected area? call your vet like now and tell him your dog is not responding to the antibiotics and ask about warm soaks for the swelling, etc. Please keep us posted.

PS: I also found out that a little t-shirt or dolls dressed (being you dog may be small enough) worked better than the e-collar (in this instance the plastic ring around the neck). Also be sure your dog is drinking enough fluids.

If he's been on anti-biotics for four days now and the infection seems to be worse or not any better, then he needs to be seen again by the vet. I've taken care of lots of neutered dogs and after about 4-5 days, they are pretty much back on their feet, so to speak.

Is the swelling red, and hot to the touch? Does your dog lick this area (if so, this is also a likely cause)? The licking could have given him a secondary infection, and continued licking will make it worse. Prevent him from licking, and to soothe the area, you can use some Witch Hazel on a cotton ball - even on the incision. I would take him back to the vet, immediately. After 4 days, this dog should be running around like nothing ever happened.

NOTE: Rimadyl has caused severe problems, some resulting in death, in some dogs (my male was vomiting blood and nearly died). Discontinue, and get something else, or eliminate altogether. Cold packs to reduce swelling and inflammation will help with pain, but be careful not to apply directly to the skin - you can get an ice burn, and THAT won't help!

Hope your puppy is feeling better already! Keep us posted on progress.

Call Your Vet

After 4 days your dog should be better. It only takes about 48 hours for meds to start working .
hHe may need a shot of antibiotics to get him over this infection. Make sure you keep him highdrated give pedelite if need be it will help flush the infection out the more fluids you get in him . Good luck

Re: Peke Neutered... Now Infected

Sorry for the late response, I've been on the road for work. I called our Vet the day after I posted this topic and he said to use Neosporin on the incision until he could come in for an appointment. At the app, he prescribed a spray for the incision, which is very handy, instead of trying to hold an 8 pound wiggler to rub Neosporin on something that hurts. All is well now, he is up and playing (as much as he can with an e-collar) except for the grudge he has against me for holding him up while he gets sprayed. Thanks to you all for your responses.
