Prostate Problems?????

My intact 10 year Mastiff has been under the weather for about 2 months. We have though it was all sorts of different things. The vet now believes that his prostate is the problem and is recommending that we neuter the dog.

His symptoms are:

a. Stiffness in the rear
b. Diarrhea
c. Bleeding from the urethra.
d. Depression.

Any feed back on this procedure would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hello,

Bleeding from the urethra is a very convincing symptom of prostatic disease. If the bleeding occurs outside urination, it is very likely the prostate is diseased. Prostatic tissu develops under the influence of testosterone which is produced by the testicule.

Castration is indicated in all cases of prostate disease.

Should there be any doubt about the diagnosis of prostate disease, I recommend urine sampling and ultrasound examination of the prostate/kidney and bladder as the best approch for such a problem.

Good luck
