Exclamation 7 Month old puppy had the runs

Hey all,

I adopted a 7 month old Corgi mix from the humane society about 10 days ago. She's been fine until today (the first night we locked her in her crate to sleep). When I woke up I found her blanket covered in dog droppings so I rushed her outside and she went to the bathroom several times (she usually only goes once) and the last couple of times were empty except for some "spurts" (sorry, I just don't know how else to describe it). She also dragged her butt outside and left a trail.

Since I didn't want her doing that on the carpet, I left her outside and put her crate, dirtied blanket, and water out there as well. I fed her her regular dog food, although maybe I shouldnt've. She seems better but I was just curious if there was any cause for immediate alarm.

I think the cause was the Kong peanut butter I put in her Kong toy. I'd be sure of it, except that she'd had it the night before with no problems. Could it be because I gave it to her two nights in a row? Could that overwhelm her system? Or is it likely something else?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hmm, I was going to suggest that maybe you are feeding different food than they were giving her at the shelter...but you've had her for 10 days already. I'd guess that it was the peanut butter...what kind are you giving her? I like to give Bridgette all natural peanut butter because it's got no artificial "stuff" on it. LoL. I wouldn't be too alarmed if it only happened one time. What I would do is monitor the poop over the next two days (don't feed her anymore peanut butter) and see if it gets better/worse/the same. If it doesn't go away I'd see a vet about it. Also if she starts to get lethargic or loses her appetite then seek a vet asap just in case it is something serious. If she does start to act like she is feeling sick then try feeding her white rice with either chicken or boiled hamburger.

It could still be a change in food and water. If the dog is use to a certain kind of water city or well water and it's changed that will cause the run's. It's possible that it took ten days to hit her system. If this is the case she will get use to it just watch her close. Has she had all her shots ???

If you haven't already, be sure to have her checked over by your regular vet, including having a stool sample checked for worms or parasites.

The shelter where I work requires that all adopted dogs be seen by a private vet within 2 weeks of the adoption, or you have no recourse if something is wrong with the dog. I think it's a great idea since you can establish a relationship with a vet. It's murder trying to get someone to bend over backwards for a sick dog that they've never met. So better to establish a relationship. Also your vet can be sure that the dog is up to date on all shots, worming, etc.
It may be the peanut butter you gave the dog. But shelter dogs are exposed to lots of bad things in the usually crowded environments. Just to be sure I think I would get the vet for a little check up.

Most dogs will get the runs when they are stressed or when their food is changed.
Give her a little longer and make sure she has lots of water so she does not get dehydrated.

Depending on where you live as well (near the woods and other possible water sources) she may have gotten Beaver Fever or giardia (which can be gotten from drinking out of toilets). For that she will just need some pills from the vet for a week or so.
