Puppy has infection and has started leaking urine?

My puppy has had some spay complications which I posted about a couple of days ago, so I will keep the description short. Her stitches came apart, exposing her omentum, the vet re-sutured her and put a plastic shield under the bandaging to keep her from clawing the sutures open again.

The plastic shield ended up doing more harm than good. It cut into her pretty badly, but she didn't seem bothered by it (she's a tough girl!), and the only reason I knew to take her to the vet was the strong smell that was coming from the bandage.

The vet said the cuts were pretty infected (and let me tell you, they smell infected). He gave her a cortisone shot, and sent home prednizone pills for her to start taking tonight.

I took her out an hour or so ago to use the bathroom, and I noticed some liquid in her crate. When I brought her back in after she emptied her bladder, I noticed that everywhere she walked there were little drops. I checked her out and found that it is urine. I'm concerned because she just emptied her bladder. She's still leaking a bit, and it is now an hour and a half later.

I called the vet and they said not to worry that this could just be caused by the steroids. Has anyone experienced this before? I've had so many scares with Bowie over the last week that I'm extra paranoid now!

It could be Spay Incontinence but I don't know if it happens that soon after a Spay... My aunt and uncles chocolate lab has it.. she just takes a pill every day to keep her from leaking.

I was wondering about spay incontinence too, but it just seems too soon.

I'm hoping it's nothing too serious, but poor Bowie has just had such bad luck recently. I can't help but worry!

Re: Puppy has infection and has started leaking urine?

Did your dog go through her first heat before spaying? My in laws dog was spayed before her first heat and this led to incontinence. Although this sounds terrible, they actually were able to contain and control the problem over the years. They just recently lost this old girl to old age...she was close to 14.

Mainly, she would pee when excited so they would open the door and let her out when someone pulled in the yard so the dribbling happened outside. They also let her run like a crazy pup after riding in the car, before going in the house to let the dribble run out. It seemed to get better as she got older.

I have read both sides to getting a dog spayed, before or after first heat. It may be hard to tell until all is healed and meds are all out of her system if this will be a recurring problem.
