Flea colars and Kids

Are flea collars bad for my kids to be touching? I've been trying to keep the kids hands away from the colar.

Re: Flea colars and Kids

We are going to get the drops this weekend when we get paid...Heres the story my husband brought the pup home not thinking all the things that we will need to pay for...Now is not the time to have a dog but my husband refuses to get him into a better home that can afford him. God forbid anything ever happend to him we wouldnt beable to afford the bills! I am so sad about it...I love my pup more than anything...but were facing hard times right now with 2 children and only one of us working...Im a stay at home mom bc my kids are 3 and 2. I dont know what to do. I talked to my vet yesterday about getting him on flea and heart worm meds and they of course want to test him for worms since he has fleas. $100+ that we just dont have atm. We are going to save it and should have it within the month...I know someone is going to hound me for having a dog that I can not afford...My dog eats better than me!!! HAHA

Re: Flea colars and Kids

I completely understand. My hubby has been laid off since Christmas eve and right now I am the only one working. We just had to put our 10 year rotties down and it was during the time the vet was closed, so we got an emergency fee tacked on to it. Thankfully though my vet will let me do payments with them, but then I have been going there for about 30 years (including childhood with my mom).

Has you given him a flea bath? Those really help as well.

I am not going to criticize you for having a dog you can't afford. I am sure that you are not the only one. Fortunately for me I was able to make payments on Lola's spay and microchip surgery and I had not been using that vet very long. The only time I seen him before was when I first got Lola. It probably helped though that I knew him through my sister who lived across the street from him and she had used him countless times for her dog.

Many people are giving up on their pets during hard times and you should be commended for not giving up. The reason for the worm test is because without the test if the dog already has heartworm that giving the hearteorm prevention meds could actually do more harm than good. As for the flea meds you need to know the dogs exact weight as to little of the flea preventive would be ineffective and to much can be very harmful.

The best thing to do to prevent unforeseen incidents with the dog is to keep a close eye on him when he is out of his crate and keep an eye on him when he is playing with the kids.

After the first exam by the vet and all the shots are done it gets easier. The second exam a rabies shot might not be needed because some states have multiple years before they are needed again. You might want to check with your local health department of dog control to see if they have a rabies clinic. Ours has one annually and they give the rabies shot for free. This saves me about $25.00 from having it done at the vet.

Also if it is just shots that your dog needs after the first set are done by the vet you might want to inquire with the vet to see if a vet tech can administer them instead. I did this recently with the Second booster needed for Boardatella after Lola"s initial one. This saved more money by them not charging a vet visit. You might also ask the vet if they will match the price of the flea and heartworm meds to an on-line site such as Petmeds.com

Hope this info helps.
