greyhound puppy question

I have noticed a stiffness and lack of response from my six month old greyhounds back legs and hips when he tries to stand and walk after laying down, it doesn't give him any pain(he yelps if a fly lands on him)and he walks it off in a few strides or so depending on where he has been sleeping and for how long, sometimes he attempts to get up and gives up ,its like his back end is still asleep. other than that he runs like the wind and jumps up and down on the settee perfectly normally. Is this simply a trait of the breed, i know they dont like to sit because of their hips, or should i contact our vet advise from other greyhound owners would be much appreciated thankyou

Are you still in touch with the breeder he came from (presuming he's a purebred)? Otherwise, maybe a reassurance call to the vet is in order.

What you are describing is not anything I've ever seen in a greyhound or a greyhound puppy. They should be able to get up and down at will with no problems in their hind end. One thing that IS a common trait is stoicism in the face of extreme pain. A fly lands on them and they'll let out the Greyhound Scream of Death. Break a leg or suffer some other injury that causes monumental pain and you won't hear a peep. Do not assume that the lack of a yelp means there is a lack of pain!

I'd take the pup to the vet for a thorough exam and probably some xrays to see what's going on w/his spine/hips/legs. There is a condition that causes lameness called Lumbosacral Stenosis...but I've never heard of it affecting puppies...typically only older males.

The confusing part of this issue is if you are playing with him on the floor he can leap up from laying without faulter or if the cat comes in.Its like if you go for a long run and the lactics set in, the next morning you get up and your legs know about it, or if you've slept awkwardly, i'm wondering if i'm over exercising a body that is also growing at a phenomenal rate (he fits snuggly in a 26" jacket)

Ithink after watching closley his failed attempts to get up are his choice of body alignment, now he repositions and gets up, still looks like he's slept awkwardly, perhaps if he slept in his nice comfy bed instead of the hall floor(carpet on a concrete floor)he might do better
