blood count

Took my dog ( 8yr old male mixed retriever ) for his yearly visit to the vet. His blood work showed low red blood cell count and high white blood cell count. All other tests came back normal (kidney, liver, lymphatic, etc). Vet said to come back in a month to do another blood test. Anybody else ever come across this with their dog? Thanks

No I have not personally however I think I would take the dog to anouther vet or better yet if you are close to a vet school I would take him there. With high white cell counts it is not something I would take a waight and see type attitude. I know you vet wants to compair readings as they may just be off on that day which is very posible. Even if you just taked to a specialist at a vet school and see what thay say. I know I have done this befor with blood test results with my animals. Really gives you anouther opions on things.

Best of luck to you and your doggie.

I'm with nrhareiner above. High white count can indicate some sort of infection. Did your vet give you the actual numbers for the cell counts from the blood test? Did the doc talk to you about things that might be causing those values to be out of whack? Does your dog have any symptoms? Has he been eating and drinking normal and have normal activity levels?

This is one of those things that might not be anything to worry about, but with an 8 year old, you're getting into senior status and you can't be too careful.

It's great that all the other tests came back looking good though.
