Vaccine question

We have a dog that is about 4 years old or so. Our vet has it to where she gets a DA2P-CPV booster during her annual exam, but also wants her to get an additional Parvo booster at her six month exam, every year. I was wondering if this was normal procedure? I am worried about over vaccinating. She is a very healthy indoor small breed. (Under 20 pounds) Thanks for any advice.

Re: Vaccine question

There were revised vaccine protocols given out in 2006 by the AVMA. This is the site where you can see them and what THEY recommend as the MINIMUM vaccines required to ensure immunity:

https://secure.aahanet.org/eweb/dyna...cineGuidelines

MOST vets overvaccinate. That is what they learned at the time and they are adamant about it. I will NOT allow my animals to be vaccinated over one year of age.

Think about it. You were vaccinated last when? Do you get a new vaccine every year for polio, etc.? Of course not. Vaccine immunity lasts years and years. You do not need to vaccinate your pets so often.

By law, some pets MUST be vaccinated for rabies more often than I would like but they have it down to every three years now.

If you read the guidelines from the link above, you will see your pet is fine.

If you are dealing with a shelter environment, there are different guidelines.

If you are dealing with a dog who goes to doggy daycare or plays with a ton of other dogs in the dog park, you want to be very careful to follow those guidelines.

A lot of people, like me, don't vaccinate after the one year booster is given.

Please read the guidelines given by the link above and then you should know what's best for your pet. I'd never vaccinate a four year old dog who has minimal exposure to other dogs but you must read the information and make an informed decision yourself.

Re: Vaccine question

Thank you for the link. We would never deny something that our dog needed of course, but am interested in reading up on the subject so we can make an informed decision, for instance if the risk of the vaccine outweighs the risk of the disease.

Thanks again, looks like I have some reading to do.

Re: Vaccine question

That's going a little overboard. I think you'd be fine without the parvo booster.

If you are looking to do more reading, join the "Truth about vaccines" list and read their files and the ebook on natural immunity. It's a world of information.

Re: Vaccine question

I was flipping through an issue of "Veterinary Economics" (I'm guessing this isn't a mag that vets want their customers to see ), and 6-month parvo vaccines were touted as a good way to increase profits, by playing on the customers' fear of such a dread disease.

There was a backlash of letters to the editor in the next issue, from vets who felt that that was going TOO far, no matter how much you want to maximize profits. There is no scientific basis for giving any vaccine every 6 months.

Re: Vaccine question

Besides all the good reasons given above, I don't see the sense in giving a 4 year old a Parvo booster. Adult dogs CAN get it, but it is primarily a disease of young dogs, and by 4 they have already come in contact with a little bit everything.

I think it's usually given with an annual distemper booster combo, so you might not even realize your dog is being vaccinated for it.

Also what they don't tell you is the vaccine itself can spread Parvo to other dogs right after vaccination through their feces.

Re: Vaccine question

It seems that my Vet office is just set in their ways quite a bit. For instance during her annual exam last July they gave her the kennel cough vaccine. I can't think of the name right now, but anyway, I had planned on discussing if it was needed but it is like they just grab her and start doing whatever they think is right. So the other day I dropped by to pick up her other six months of hartguard because I was in the area. I mentioned picking up the city license as she is on the three year rabies, and it is a new year. They said no, I had to wait until her July exam. As I said they also want her in next month for the six month exam and boosters.

Anyway, I appreciate all the advice.
