Question Yearly shots

Good Saturday morning.

Could you please teach me which shots should be given yearly to keep them up to date? also fees - I don't expect exact amount. just want to have an idea.

Is there also yearly checkups? If so what are those? Becky is between 1.5 or 2 years old.

There called booster shots. If you give your self there about 5 dollars or so. All so they should be wormed every year. We get what they call a universal wormer. I should say, allways get your wormers from your vet. The stuff at the stores are worthless.

Yearly exams are a chance for a vet to lay hands on your dog and make sure everything looks and feels normal. They may also do a heartworm test and re-fill your heartworm preventative prescription. Some vets will perform a fecal test and give you wormer as needed. We only worm if the dog needs it,not as a matter of routine. Of course, vaccinations can be done at that same time as the office visit. There is also the option of doing a three year vaccination protocol, now being touted as safe and effective by many vet schools. You would have to do your own research and discuss it with your vet to determine if it's something you wanted to do.

All of our dogs' vaccinations are done by a veterinarian. I *can* order them online and give them myself, but honestly, it's just not worth it. A dog can have a bad reaction to a vaccination and I certainly don't have the medical training or experience to treat something like that. Not to mention, rabies, by law has to be given by a D.V.M in order to be legal. If I have to make a trip to the vet for the rabies shot, a few extra bucks for the others really isn't that big of a deal (and we have 14 dogs.)

Price will really depend on your vet, as vet prices can range wildly even within the same city. Our vet charges about $35 for an office visit...full set of vaccinations is probably another $20. (we take multiple dogs, so I forget the exact breakdown of the costs) Your best bet is to call your vet and just ask them about their pricing schdule.

I would definately take any dog in for an annual check-up. My older dogs go every six month. A beagle, in particular, should go in with a fresh stool specimen to test for parasites, since they eat EVERYTHING.

The good news is that some of the essentials, heartworm and flea prevention for example, are based on the dogs weight, so a 25 pound beagle is not going to set you back as much as a mastiff.

Vet prices varie greatly, even in the same area, but cheapest is not always best. Ask around if you haven't already found a vet you like.

Thumbs up

Thank you for wonderful info. Being a beginner, I wanted to plan it ahead of time in case it costs hundreds of dollars . I thought it would be expensive since it is "YEARLY" check up.

RON you ain't kidding. Becky is cute and adorable but also she is just eating machine, she literally cleans kitchen floor , digging into trash cans and sometimes her own poo poo.. bad girl. What can I say? That is wonderfulness of Becky, my lovely girl.
