| Re: Is this an emergency? Please check quick. When I worked at petsmart we had a dog that got so excited it got stuck out for like 20 minutes. we had to take him out of daycamp because he wouldnt calm down. he was licking and running around and it actually started dripping blood, they took him to the vets to calm down but I will NEVER forget that.
Oh and TJ- I cant IMAGINE what kind of pics you got when you googled that! |

| Re: Is this an emergency? Please check quick. LOL! I hate to laugh but it really is too funny. Only if the erection is followed with frequent urination would I be extremely worried and even then just give the dog loads of water [sign of a UTI].
And its ok--I lived on a farm and never saw that either...and I have seen pigs have sex so I think I've seen everything.
And as a person who has 2 girl and 3 boy dogs...BOYS ARE A LOT EASIER TO DEAL WITH!
yes they can...thank god all of my male dogs came neutured but trust when i say it doesn't take the urge away at all lol

Ew ew ew...
Anyway, that happened to Bartleby once and I nearly died. To be fair, I'd just seen a "penis repair" at the clinic because the dog couldn't erm..pull it back in himself. So, I was sure he'd have to have surgery. Luckily he just sort of froze in place for about 10 minutes and it um...repaired itself. I still feel like an idiot for freaking out so bad. |

| Re: Is this an emergency? Please check quick. OK- I've just gotta tell this story, because it still cracks me up.
When I was about 10 yrs old we owned a Lhasa. My dad was an airline pilot and my mom, a homemaker...kinda like "Bree" on Desperate Housewives. The perfect housekeeper, cook, wife, hostess and mom. My dad liked to invite pilot friends over for drinks/dinner. My mom always wanted everything to be perfect.
So my parents have another pilot couple over and are entertaining in the living rm, where we kids were not allowed unsupervised. Definitely no eating in there.
While my parents are having drinks and hor de ourves, all of a sudden, Fluffy comes walking in to the living rm, with an erection, humping the air, and ejaculating all over the carpet as he walked. My mom jumped up and grabs the dog under his arms, running to the kitchen, yelling to my dad, "Quick, Roger...Get a paper towel!!!"
I'm not sure how Miss Manners would tell you to respond when your dog spooges on the carpet in front of guests, but that was truly comical. Her dinner party ambiance was completely ruined by a 20 lb horny dog.

The didn't cover that during my biology degree. |

| Re: Is this an emergency? Please check quick. Okay, so just a wee bit of well, male dog upkeep advice.
Now that you know he can/will do that, you will need to make sure the fur on his sheath is kept trimmed (don't know if they grow longer fur there, but my boys do). If it is too long, the fur can catch in the sheath when the penis retracts and cause some serious pain.
Also know that if that happens, KY-Jelly is a good thing to have on hand...
Oh, the joy of an intact boy! |

Oh, the joy of an intact boy! | Good thing to know. He's pretty furry around that area, but it isn't exactly long. I'll take a closer look at it though and maybe try to keep it shored up a bit.
I know red rockets won't stop when he's neutered, but will the full blown erections? |

| Re: Is this an emergency? Please check quick. I didn't know they were that common. I've owned/been around intact males for years and have never had any troubles, my males never drop the red rocket, and I've only even seen the full blown red rocket twice, and they were both on young studs on their first bitch, they got to excited and worked up to fast. ;-)
Maybe mine are abnormal? :P Mine don't even walk around air humping or anything like that. ;-) In fact, mine aren't allowed to hump at all. My studs know when it's proper, but they aren't allowed to fool around with anything else. |

his brother was neutered on the same day and keeps getting caught in a tie with a neighborhood intact bitch. |

We will occasionally see a bit of lipstick in an adolescent boy, but the whole show hasn't ever happened without good reason (like being collected for shipping or freezing). I don't allow the random humping, just like I don't allow them to mark all over the place or on lead. I teach my boys to be good citizens! |

Oh, the joy of an intact boy! | Oddly enough, he was at the groomers for his yearly bath today, and they trimmed that area without me even asking. Guess I picked a good place! |

| Re: Is this an emergency? Please check quick. Just a question..
I have ALWAYS spayed the females b4 their first heat (at 6 months or 7 months at the latest) and neutered the boys by the time they are one.
Unless you are titling and breeding, why for the WAIT? My vets don't seem concerned with doing it sooner as opposed to later? |

It showed strong links between HD and neutering early (prior to full physical maturity), especially in males. Neutered males were something like 190% more likely to get HD, and spayed females were like 160% more likely.
I'll try to dig up the study, see if I can't post the original link.

You know how they say the chances get worse every heat the dog goes through? It drops only a little after the first heat, then starts dropping relatively significantly after that.
But another disease associated with being spayed drops significantly if the dog goes through one heat. So many consider it to be a lot healthier to spay after first heat. |
