Abby just had a seizure

Holy man that was scary!! About 10 mins ago while I was typing a response in the general forum, Abby had a seizure that lasted 2-3 mins. She was on the couch right beside me with her front feet on the top of the couch. I felt her start vibrating and I turned my head and saw that she was seizing! She was starting to fall over so I grabbed her and put her down on the couch. I called my hubby over to watch her and I called the vet.

As far as I know, Abby has never had a seizure before. I have also never had a dog that has had any. I'm still a little freaked out about it!

First the Cherry Eye and now a seizure... I still have a month and a half to go with her!!

I know how scary that can be....my foster pug just had one not too long ago and the former owner never told me he has them in the past, so I was not prepared for it at all....

I hope your pup is ok

Re: Abby just had a seizure

You can't even tell that anything was wrong! She is completely normal now. She was a little shaky and was panting and licking her mouth for about 15 mins after but totally normal now.

The vet said to just keep an eye on her and if it happens again basically do what I did(make sure she couldn't hurt herself). He said that if she doesn't stop seizing within 10 mins max that I need to get her to the clinic. I'm keeping everything crossed that it doesn't happen again!

Is there any signs or symptoms that I can watch for before she may have another one? Or do they just happen out of the blue, no signs? I wasn't looking at her when she had the seizure so I don't know if there was any warning.

Re: Abby just had a seizure

I've had 2 dogs that had seizures. One Cocker Spaniel that had about 3 in her life (lived to age 13), and one chow mix that had about 3 when he got older. Vet never found a reason, and there was never any after effects.

They are pretty common, and usually idiopathic (unexplained/not frequent).

Re: Abby just had a seizure

Princess our Fostered Beagle who is around 12 yrs old has them. Usally anything stressful brings hers on, otherwise she does not have 1.
It can be scary, just stay calm and take to her while she is having one and calmingly pet her, let her know your there and she will be ok, I use the word REALX when she is having one and it seems to calm her more quickly.
She has phenobaritol for them. She was sezuire free for 8 months until last week, she had a small one. I usally give her a pil AFTER she has one and that is it.

So watch for stessful things and try to get her out out of that situation and then watch her for 1...

My daughter has them too, so i know about them...
