| Frontline and Advantage are both WAY safer than a regular flea collar. Those usually contain pyrethroids, (as does Bio Spot and other over the counter flea meds), and those are a lot more toxic to mammals and fish than the ingredients in Frontline and Advantage. These products have been used worldwide for years without problems. You will get the occasional dog with a skin reaction, but even this is rare.
It's easy to get caught up in the hype on the internet. In fact, there are several "natural" oils used for repellency that are actually toxic to dogs and/or cats in sufficient quantities, such as Pennyroyal. It's easy to make the association that "natural" equals "safe", but that is not always the case. The advantage you have with using flea medications is that there is a defined toxicology profile on them, and usually with herbal treatments or essential oils, there is no such information.
I am not saying it's always bad to use essential oils and such, but just that you need to read up about what you are using. |
