My puppy has hurt his pad - Need Advice

Hi,

My 5 month old lab has hurt his pad, my husband and I take him to the park to play ball and on Saturday we noticed his pad was bleeding...After we arrived back home and had a chance to look at it closer, we noticed is was his elbow pad that was bleeding and very red. It looks like a piece of the pad has came right off. I phoned our vets right away and was told there is nothing they can do, to try some polysporon (sp).

Does anyone have any advise or experience with this kind of injury??

Is it okay to soak it in Epsom salt once a day?

Find a different vet to look at it, it may need stiches.

Our last lab once tore a pad. It healed on its own after a few days of rest, but she didn't tear it off completely. Our vet looked at it and it wasn't bad enough to stitch.

Our Goldendoodle...Shugs, tore both her front pads while playing fetch on a tennis court, (was a bad idea). They both healed up after a few days. Was nasty looking though. It looked like there were a few layers of skin pulled back.

We've had a dog make hamburger of their pads chasing balls on a tennis court as well. I had the vet look at it, the gave us some oral antibiotics because these typically are "dirty" wounds (lots of debris involved, road rash stuff), and they encouraged us to follow up with Neosporin cream on the wounds daily, keep them wrapped with gauze in between, and keep the dog from licking them.

What I usually do with Rosee when she tears up the pads on all four feet is I wash them with warm water (I don't like to use peroxide as it doesn't get the bacteria/dirt out of the wound.. just fizzes up in the scrap/wound) Keep her from licking them... and put polysporin on them. I will then wrap them up in gauze, and put her boots on. (Boots that she now wears outside when we're playing)

Now I doubt you're puppy will let you do this/keep on the gauze. I would take it to another vet. Especially if it's on the elbow?

Re: My puppy has hurt his pad - Need Advice

My lab recently cut her pad pretty bad. It looked like someone was murdered on my kitchen floor, lol. We wrapped it really good and it healed on it's own in a week or so.

But if you think it's that bad, take your dog to the vet...even if they can't do anything to fix it, they can probably clean it and wrap it better than you or I could

Hope your dog gets better.
