Why so much eye mucus?

Anybody know why my four year old shih tzu's eyes are covered in mucus? It isn't simple tears. It is thick and slimy. Sometimes it sticks to her eyeballs, which can't be comfortable. I regularly clean off her eyes with a bit of saline solution on a cotton ball, but I'm wondering if there is anything that I can do to prevent the mucus.

Thanks!

It sounds to me like you need to take her to the vet. She may have an infection.
