Hasn't lost baby tooth

I have two 8 month old Papillons, and one of them still hasn't lost one of her canine baby teeth. She already has the adult tooth, right in front of the baby tooth. I keep checking to see if its getting loose, nothing. She lost the other over a month ago, and my other puppy lost his over a month ago also. It doesn't appear to be bothering her at all.....great appetite, etc. And its not causing any of the others to be out of line. Is this something that I should be concerned about? Do I need to have it pulled? I called the vets office, and they seem so quick to want to put her under anesthesia and pull it. I just don't want to put her through that if its not necessary.

Re: Hasn't lost baby tooth

With humans, baby teeth left can cause a lot of problems, so I doubt it'd be any different with a dog. If the adult tooth is already in, I'd get it pulled.
But if you don't feel comfortable with all that, maybe it isn't the best option. I know more about human teeth than I do dogs. Sorry I couldn't be much help.

Re: Hasn't lost baby tooth

this happened with my dog Maggie. She had double canines for the longest time, to the point where people said to get them removed. But the vet said they were too deep to be excavated on so she said to leave them there unless something happens. She eventually lost both.

I'm not saying don't do anything about it, but when we went against everybody's suggestions she just lost it on her own.

Re: Hasn't lost baby tooth

Thanks for both of the responses. I do have an appointment with the vet next Tuesday. I don't want that last little tooth to cause any problems. It doesn't appear to be at this time. I also talked to my breeder and she said she's had it happen before too, and they eventually fell out on their own. I wanted to know if its happened to anyone else, and how it turned out.

Farore, how old was Maggie when she finally lost them on her own?

Talk to your vet about it, sometimes they NEED to be removed because they will not fall out.
