My dog - heart problem

Last night I took my dog for a walk in the park. We walked about a half a mile and he was alright sniffing around. Wanted to start running with him but he suddenly lost his cheerfulness. Raised his butt up a bit (thought he had problems with his back for a second) and he couldn't walk very good. I went fast to get the car and took him home.

I left the dog with my mom because i had to go to work. This morning my mother called me to come quick because the dog wasn't feeling so good. By the time i got home he couldn't move and he pooped while lying on the carpet. I had to put him on a carpet and carry him into the car.

I arrived at the vet (clinical-hospital) first thing the doc observed that his gums and tongue, and eye mucous were pale (he said he has anemia). Oscar (my dog) could hardly breathe (actually since i got home to get him wasn't breathing well). So he used an ultrasound (MRI?) device to see what's going on. He observed that there's something wrong with his heart.

In a nutshell:

He told me that there's ("pericardic") liquid in his heart and that it can be with blood or either without. Either way he suggested a puncture to drain the liquid and determine a diagnostic. He took out ~50 ML of blood out of there. His breath returned to normal.

The doc gave Oscar an infusion with anti coagulants i think. Also we had to put a urinary probe

Blood report showed that:
(Age - 11, breed sheppard)

TGO (min 9 max 57 UI) 173.8
TGP (min. 8.5 - max 55 UI) 151.7
Amilaza pancreatica (min 270 - max 1100 UI)
Glucoza (min 60 - max 115 mg/dl) 281.3
Uree (min 8 - max 50mg/dl) 66.9
Creatinina (min 05 - max 1.6 mg/dl) 2.2
Fosfataza alcalina (min. 10 -max 100 UI) 154.6
Lipaza pancreatica 52.8

They aren't sure of a proper cause, nor of a treatment. Please help me out with finding what's the cause, but most importantly how to treat him!!!

Re: My dog - heart problem

My suggestion would be a veterinary cardiologist. If you're near a University or a larger city you should be able to find one fairly easily. I'm sorry to hear of this, I lost a dog to a cardiac problem and I know how scary it is.

How old is your dog and did you get it from a reputable breeder with a health contract?

Re: My dog - heart problem

He is 11 years old. I got it from a friend, no contract. He hasn't got a heart history. He never had a problem with his heart. He has Eurican DHPPI2-LR (2 one has an L on it the other DHPPP in his health paper). Also he is under frontline and Stronghold for parasites.

He has ~45 KG...

At 11 years old it could be MANY things, I'd have him checked out by a cardiologist.

Heh... Romania

His doc is going to come in about an hour. Let's see what he can do further. I hope I can get hold of a cardiologist today.

Re: My dog - heart problem

The dog wanted out, and so we did. He peed and pooped. The doc came and administered anti-bleeding drug intravenous and intramuscular and with riger? infusion. He started shivering now he has a fever, which i hope it will go away. His breath almost returned to normal. But there are periods of time when his breath is heavy. Mostly when in heat and i have to open the window (-5oC outside). The doc said that the cold helps the blood vessels and that's why he breathes better.

Tomorrow will be another day of adm. the drug. And the day after tomorrow he said we'll take him to make an electrocardiogram

Re: My dog - heart problem

I'm sorry to hear about your dog's health problems. Ask your vet about a referral to a cardiologist. He'll know if there's anyone in your area.

And don't give up on him. We had a Maltese diagnosed with heart trouble when he was about the same age as yours and he lived until he was 18 years of age. I think it was a different heart problem, but hopefully they can get a handle on what yours has and he'll live several more years with treatment.

Re: My dog - heart problem

I sure hope so. It's really tough having him in this condition. He's my best friend and the only pet I ever had. I have him since i was about 8 years old, and you can imagine that i've grew up with him. Sometimes i wish he would just go. But I'm going to do whatever is in my power to save him..

Re: My dog - heart problem

I understand how you feel. Remember that saving him may not always be the right thing to do for HIM. If his quality of life is virtually nonexistant, it may be time to let him go, holding him while the doc puts an end to his suffering.

Whatever happens, whatever you decide, we're here for you. I'll keep you and Oscar in my prayers.
