Itchy ears

My dog has had an itchy ear the past few days. She's scratched it so much it is bleeding, doesn't smell very good and is a bit crusty. There doesn't seem to be any discharge.
I've put hydrocortisone (.05%) cream on the effected area to stop the itching and put on a collar so she can't reach it.
Has anyone else had this problem...any suggestions?

Stop the hydrocortisone and get your dog to a vet, it sounds like she has a severe ear infection. The last time one of my dogs got that bad he had a fungal infection AND a bacterial infection.

Thanks Carla.
I'll take her in the morning. She seems better this afternoon...not as bothered by it and the discharge has slowed down.

Sounds to me it could be canker(a type of ear infection ) the vet would give you powder to sprinkle in her ears. hope she gets better soon

Let us know how she got on

Thumbs up Bit is fine

Trip to the vet showed that she has a yeast infection in her ear. 10 days of drops and she'll be fine. Thanks for the advice.
A funny thing: the Vet has asked for one of her puppies if I breed her.

Glad to hear sh'e alright and the problem ws caught before it became too bad. Do an internet search on "Blue Power Ear Wash" I use on on my guys and it really helps to prevent all types of ear infections.

It's pretty easy to make yourself.

Question

How do you make it yourself? Becky also iches her ears a lot then shakes her like crazy, She doesn't bleed, nor any crust, it looks fine. - when she scratches really bad, I used "hand sanitizer" (I don't know better, just thought it might kill the germs that causes ithyness) sometimes, triple antibiotic ointment. I clean her ears very ofthen. The longest time I had gone without cleaning was a week or so.

Carla,
Can you share how to make it yourself? Any other local stores carry them by any chance? Thank you

======================================
Never mind Carla,
I did some search where I can order it, instead I got "how to make" guides instead, LOL

CARLA kindly gave this recipe to me in a pevious post. I have used it and it has really helped.

INGREDIENTS:

16 Oz. Isopropyl Alcohol

4 Tablespoons Boric Acid Powder

16 Drops Gentian Violet Solution 1%

Mix together in alcohol bottle and shake well.

Please shake this solution every time you use it to mix the Boric Acid Powder. Either a baby ear syringe or a plastic squirt bottle work well for putting the solution in the ear.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE:

Evaluate condition of ears before treating and if the are inflamed and sore do not attempt to pull hair or clean out ear at all. Just flush and then wait until inflammation is gone, which will be about two days. Warm the solution and shake the bottle each time before using. The dogs will accept the treatment much better if you warm it up for them.

Flood the ear with solution (gently squirt bottle).

Massage gently, wipe with 100% cotton pad.

On first treatment: flood the ear twice, wipe with a pad, and leave alone without massage.

The dog will shake out the excess, which can be wiped with a tissue. (Note: the Gentian Violet does stain fabrics so you're best to do this outdoors.)

Treat 2x per day for the first week to two weeks, depending upon severity of ears.

After the 2nd or 3rd day you can clean out the ear with a tissue or cotton pad.

Treat 1x per day for the next 1-2 weeks.
Treat 1x per month (or even less frequently, depending on the dog).

Talking

Thanks Becky's Mum
I know my name means Palm Tree from my ballet classes (Mum's persistence)
when I was a kid I was always tall for my age 9now a reasonable 5'10")and really crap at ballet. My ballet teacher always called me "palm Tree" for being so tall and rooted like a tree... oh well.

Unhappy

Hey everybody-

I am having a heck of time finding Gentian Violet 1% at local stores. Where do you buy it usually?

And Boric acid powder is the same one known to kill Roaches and ants? Just want to confirm. Please let me know thank you.

You should be able to find the Gentian Violet at the drug store or at a health foods store, the boric acid is the same, just be sure you get the pure stuff, again at the drug store. If you have a problm finding the Gentian Violet, you might need to find it online.

Becky, have you considered earmites?

For those who have experience with the Blue Power Ear Wash, is it effective on earmites? I'm just curious since it sounds potent against infection, perhaps it worked on the little buggers too - or not.

Where can you purchase the ear wash?

I looked on the internet to find somewhere to buy Blue Power Ear Wash and didn't find anything. Does anyone know a site where you can purchase the earwash?
Thanks!!

You can't purchase it, you would make it from the recipe I posted in this thread.
