i think my new dog has kennel cough

ive heard of kennel cough before but dont know much about it. im taking him to the vet tomorrow for a full checkup and everything. but ive had him for a week now and this is the first day he started coughing....alot. he does a cough like every 5 seconds. hes still very active and eats but gets kinda discouraged because he coughs when he eats too. also i saw him one time after he coughed he opened his mough like he was going to vomit but nothing came out kinda like he just gagged a bit. does this sound like kennel cough to you or is it something in his throat?

Impossible to say without hearing/seeing the cough. Get him to the vet ASAP.

Re: i think my new dog has kennel cough

Sounds like kennel cough to me. My family has adopted 3 dogs from different shelters in the last couple months (separately), and all three have had kennel cough; one died from it (advanced to a severe case of pneumonia, we only had her for 4 days ).

Luckily, our other two rescues were diagnosed early enough and have been successfully treated. It's an easy fix if you catch it early. Take your pup to the vet!

Re: i think my new dog has kennel cough

Sounds like kennel cough to me too. The thing about this particular condition is that the dog can sound like he's coughing up a lung but still eating like a pig and playing like crazy. At least that is my experience with the many dogs that we've rescued from shelters. Almost all did the gagging deal too. No matter what, your dog needs to be seen by the vet. This is an airborn virus so as a courtesy, I would let the vet know that you suspect your dog has kennel cough. Some vets try to keep kennel cough patients segregated from their other patients and as the owner of dogs with compromised immune systems, I appreciate that mentality greatly.

Re: i think my new dog has kennel cough

yeah i took voss to the vet today. there was vomit everywhere this morning! clear vomit with white foam over the top. i told the vet hes coughing like constantly every few seconds, and he vomited everywhere. the vet gave him a antibiotic injection and 2 meds to take. he takes one that says cephalexin 2 times a day and he also takes one that says cough 3 times a day. i didnt think of this at the vet but after i fed him a cough tablet he vomited and im pretty sure the cough tablet probably came out with it. how am i suppose to give him these meds correctly if hes going to vomit it all out?

I would call the vet and ask what to do. If he keeps vomiting it all up, he's probably not getting the proper dosage, so they may instruct you to do something else.
