Low thyroid

We think Daisy has thyroid issues. She sleeps all the time, is lethargic, not all there, has greasy feeling coat and skin, excess hair falling out, all the classic symptoms. has extra eyelid folds, and has gained 19 lbs in 1 year. We sent off a T4 blood test to comfirm and I know thyroid is easily treatable. Do any of you have thyroid trouble, and if so, once we get her on meds, will this excess belly fat go away? She barely eats, so overfeeding isnt her trouble. I know the technical stuff, i just want to hear your stories.

Exclamation Re: Low thyroid

I just joined and saw your question for low thyroid....This seems to be a problem that is increasing for dogs as well as people. I had a bearded collie who started losing his nails and then developed severe phobias..like water boiling set him through the blinds on the 2nd floor....I came across this informationwhile researching phobias....Go to the website hemopet@hotmail.com. Dr. Dodds is famous, and has been in dog thyroid rearch for 40 years. My dogs thyroid had been tested , and I was told it was normal. It was not. A full panel not just T4 needs to be done, and different breeds have differing levels for normal. The thyroid issue caused the phobias...as well as the nails. My vet drew the blood and sent it to her per the instructions on the site. She even replied to my emails while out of town....My vet was great but wasn't as familiar with thyroid, he did the first panel and said it was normal...because the computor said normal. It was 1.1 on a scale of 1 to 6! Very subnormal. Check with Dr. Dodds. If I had known this before it would have saved 3 years of hell.

Re: Low thyroid

I have two dogs low thyroid- both rescues and give in addition to the thyloxine vitamin C and e at night. You need to support the immune system..
vit C 500 and vit e for a large breed at 400 IU..
