Parvo Treatment

As you might know Parvo is a deadly virus that attacks puppies and very rarely adult dogs.

I have a 5 yr. old shih tzu that got the virus. After taking her to 2 different vets they didn't even diagnosed her with parvo because of her age. The signs are vomit and bloody diarrhea.

After seeing a 3rd vet because of the symptoms and the smell of her feces he did a parvo test and she was positive.

Parvo is very costly to treat as you need IV, antibiotics and constant care. I had already spent $700 and she was getting worse. Finally another vet recommended a medicine called TAMIFLU. This is human’s medicine that works miracles in dogs with parvo.

The only bad thing is that it’s so new that most vets don’t know about it, so you really have to find a vet that can prescribe this for your dog.

To read more about this medicine type “parvo tamiflu” in google and read the vettechs blog.

yes. It took 3 dosis to see a difference. After the 3rd dosis my dog was alert and she was up and waking. Full recovery by the 4th day.

Glad to hear that your baby recovered!
Was she vaccinated?? it is strange to hear of an older dog especially a shih tzu getting parvo.

That is the thing that I understand the least. 2 out of 3 vets said that it's impossible for an adult dog to get parvo... so... this is my question:

1. If a vaccinated dog cannot get parvo in their adult years why some clinics recommend vaccinating the dogs every 6 months?

2. Some vets say that vaccination should be every 6 months, others every year, others every 3 years. Is parvo really needed for an adult dog or is it just a scam for the vets to charge money?

My dog's fecal tests showed weak parvo results and the white cell count was at 11. Now every vaccianted dog will show some trace of parvo because that is what the vaccination is... a little dose of parvo.

The only thing I know is that my dog was in very bad shape, she started taking Tamiflu and she got better within 2 days.

It would be nice if someone can advise if parvo vaccination is needed or not in adult dogs. If vets say it's impossible for a once vaccinated dog to get parvo in their adult years, then why spend money vaccinating them every year?

Scam or not... post your comments.

I think it depends on the breed of dog and the amount of outbreaks in your area???
Here we have high parvo rates ( along with Lepto) so vaccinations should be done. We vaccinate our Rottie Mixes yearly and the Border Collie every 3 years ( when his rabies expire)
