| Need advice quick! Hi-
I am a new member and am hoping that someone online today can help me with a problem.. I know that no one is probably a vet here, but I'm hoping someone with a previous experience can impart some valuable knowledge/advice to me regarding my problem:
I have a "large" miniature dachsund, Cyrano de Bergerac (cyrano for short) - male, weight- app. 20lbs, age - 8. On Tuesday evening of this week, he got hold of one my antibiotics - Augmentin - that i left on my coffee table to take after my dinner. I must have accidentally knocked it off the table, because when i came back I saw him chewing on something. I took it out of him mouth and saw my antibiotic. It was mostly intact, and when I examined it more closely, I saw that the capsule hadn't broken very much, and that only a very little of the contents had been released by his chewing.
I didn't think this would hurt him since he didn't get very much at all of the antibiotic, and I knew (or thought i knew) that the drug would not poison him.
Skip forward to Thursday midday. My husband came home from work to find loose bowels on the carpet and vomit nearby. My dog has been house trained all of his life, and he NEVER messes in the house, so we new that he must be feeling bad. The loose bowels has progressed to looser bowels with a little blood in the stool, and frequent vomiting.
I have not taken him to the vet only because I thought the antibiotics were working their way out of his system - what little he got of them that is. But now, I'm worried since the diarrhea and vomiting hasn't stopped, and he hasn't eaten much in the last couple of days.
other than the symptoms I've described above, he has acted perfectly normal. No apparent fatigue, fever, unusual behavior - he has even played with his toys during all of this. Please dont think me a bad pet owner. I love my pup like he was my child - he's my baby! Now it's Saturday, and the vet is closed - the only thing accessible is a emergency vet clinic in town. Can someone please lend me their expertise or own past experience similar to this so I'll know what to do? I need to know if this is something more serious than I am aware of.
Thank you! |
