Had to put our dog down today.

Just wanted to see if anybody else has had or heard of a dog passing this way.

Our dog is a perfectly healthy energetic mid size Yorkshire terrier. Saturday morning my wife noticed he was sad. I got home Saturday night and noticed his back legs were really weak and he did not want to walk. Later that night he would lay down and keep both his front left leg straight out stiff and both his back legs were kind of stiff as well. Sunday morning 3:30am I awakened to find him sitting in the corner staring up into the corner of the room. Sunday morning we take him to the vet. Now he is completely limp. Cant keep his head up, no use of any limbs, nothing. Does drink and eat at this time. She does all the test and finds nothing. The vet who came in on a Sunday just to see our dog, takes him home with her. Sunday night his heart rate starts to drop. The vet calls us and tells us to come get him take him to the emergency room. We take him and they find nothing either. We chose to bring him home with us because he does much better with my wife. He loves my wife. That night he actually does a little better, he stabilized and showed a little more movement towards my wife. Today we just took him to the neurologist. His heart rate dropped to the 30's. He started crying for the first time. He has never showed any signs of pain. So my wife had to decide to let him go. What a crappy day. At the vets he was all drugged up and he was showing no response at all to the vets. She wanted to see him one last time. When she went in there to say goodbye, he moved his head towards hers. He loved my wife. Talk about sad. So that's her last memory.
The Vet is going to take part of his brain and send it for tests, mainly for rabies. About one week ago, he had his rabies shots. Though nobody knows what happened and why, I think the last vet is leaning towards some sort of neurological problem from that shot. We are now waiting for the results. We just got the dog about a year ago, we rescued him from a parumph nevada breeder who was abusing 60 of those type of dogs. We think he was around 5 but we don't know. Know I have to tell my 2 and 3 year old that he's not coming home.

If anybody else has a similar story I'd like to hear it.

Thanks for listening,

Sincerely,

A SAD DAY.

Oh no im so sorry I know what it feels like when you loose your best friend. Just last year our 12 year old Dalmatian passed away It was horrible sitting in the floor at the vets office for 8 hours with her looking up at me with no hope. Finally after 8 hours of probably pain i knew she passed away when she peed all over herself and gave me this puppy eyes she has never given me. It broke my heart i dont even know how i made it back home. Today i still cant get over it, i cant even talk about it.

Once again im so sorry and hope everything goes alright with you and your family.

I am so sorry to hear about your dog. It's just not fair.

I think right away of a tick-borne disease, and I trust that your vet will test your dog for a panel of these.

Unhappy

I'am so sorry to hear of your yorkies passing. I hope just for your peace of mind that they can figure out what caused all the problems.

We had to put our 11 year old toy poodle, Sophie, to sleep a while back. I have never been so heartbroken. My wife is still quite sad. She died of complications from AIHA, an anemia disease. We suffered with her for almost two weeks and 1000's of dollars, that we didn't have. Our pets our just like us when it come to sickness and it is painful to watch them suffer and no matter what you do sometimes they just don't make it. It's important to realize two things...one, you will out live your pet and two...they bring you more joy and happiness than pain. Unfortunately the pain hurts. I wish you the best and I can sincerely sympathize with you and your loss.

Yorkies can be prone to liver shunts which might have caused those symptoms, and sometimes comes on very fast like that. You might ask the vet about that. There is a test for it.

I'm sorry for your loss.

I am very sorry. My deepest sympathies to you and your wife.
When I was a child one of our shelties who was always quite poorly and had severe epilepsy died very suddenly after symptoms like your Yorkie. The vet did an autopsy and he had accute liver failure.

I am so sorry..I am sitting with tears in my eyes right now...It brings back memories of having to go through the same thing with my cat..She had Feline Leukemia and I did not know it...What I went through for a week towards the end.

I took her home and she died in my arms a day later..The vet cremated her for me and I still have her...It has been over 20 yrs but it was like yesterday...

I am SO sorry to hear about your loss. Although it won't help ease your pain, I hope they find out what happened to your beloved friend. I couldn't read the entire thing because a year ago today I had to put one of my shelties down and even after a year, it is still so hard and sad. I feel so lonely without her and still miss her terribly. I know exactly how you feel.

How very strange for your sweet yorkie to go downhill so terribly fast. Keep us posted on what the vet finds out.

Seems curious to me that he had all of these problems two weeks after his rabies shoots. I just lost my German Shepherd 3 months after his annual vaccination which did not include rabies but it is my opinion that we are over-vaccinating our animals due to laws and greed of the vets. He was healthy before his shots and at that time given a clean bill of health.

Sorry for your loss and especially when you are just trying to give the best care you can to your pet.

I will never ever let any of my dogs get vaccinated on a yearly basis as the vets suggest. I have read much about this subject and believing we are over-taxing their immune systems..

The vets need the revenue from these shots to build their expensive offices and then they can make more money treating the dogs from the problems after the shots. The dogs can't talk so the vets have a perfect cover up.
Can you imagine how empty the vets offices would be without these customers? It is in my opinion a business run by the pharmacuetical companies and the vets so they can make their incomes off the pet lovers in this world.... Just a raquet!!!!!! Racket!!! whichever is the proper spelling.............

Yup, its a vast evil and cunning right wing conspiracy by selfish money hungry vets to make humongous sums of money by vaccinating healthy animals!

Funny thing is.....it also prevents dogs (and people) from dying of those terrible diseases.

Now I also think that some vets tend to overvaccinate, but the above post seems to be going a little overboard in my opinion.

Have you gotten any more information from your vet about what happened? Any lab tests back? I am interested in what might have happened to your kid.

There will always be conspiracy theories. I don't quite grasp it, but people often think that way, like everyone's trying to screw them out of their money.

Angry

Hello Dogged, I certainly respect your opinion and your experience and have seen many of your posts. I do although question your research into the immune systems and the need for duplicate vaccinations.

People normally have only one vaccination for small pox, polio, etc. and immunologists have stated that over vaccinating can mess up the immune system. Take some time and look for the information available on the subject on the internet.

Furthermore, I am willing to spend thousands of dollars on my anaimals to keep them healthy with no remorse. I am not willing to kill my animals with vaccinations that are not necessary and also determined detrimental to them. Please look at some of the information available and then tell me if you still think I am overboard.

I have taken my animals to the vets on every occasion that a reminder comes in the mail and have only, since the loss of the beautiful German Shepherd, taken the time to research the vaccination procedures and recommendations. I am not trying to keep people from taking care of their pets but only trying to show a possible link between vaccinations and illnesses.

Dogged, please be honest and tell me how you would be able to survive as a Vet Tech for twenty years if the reminders weren't sent out and you only waited for the illnesses that caused the customers to return.

I guess you may think I am bitter because of the loss of an animal and maybe I am, but I have just recently done the homework that may have well saved my dogs life had I know better.

It is very hard to put down one of the family.

I have never heard of that problem before but there must be an answer somewhere, I hope you find out what happened. My sincere sorrow for your loss.
