Dog in heat. Please Help!!??

Hey there I just adpoted a lab mix from the pound a few days ago. She is 8-10 months old and had started heat before I got her. Earlier this week she was spayed.

I have another male dog (Min Pin 9 years old-not nuetered) he too was adopted some years ago and is a bit disobedient.

The problem:
The Min Pin will not stop trying to mount the new dog. She doesnt seem to mind all that much but the problem is that I cannot get the Min Pin away from her without physical seperation (which is easy enough). He is obsessed.

What Im concerned about is will this ever stop? She is not spotting anymore and it looks like she may be in the later stages of heat. Is there anything I can do to deter the Min Pin? He is very persistent in everything he does and Im just concerned that this will be an ongoing issue.

Any help would be appreciated.

When a dog is NOT fixed thats the natural thing that comes to them. You cant keep him from doing it unless you keep them in a separate room which is no life for a dog if they like each other. If she is fix and she does not mind then whats the problem? I understand that it can be annoying but she does not mind. You should separate them but it will be horrible for both if they like each other.

PS: I dint know dogs can be in heat when fixed, is that possible?

When a dog is in heat when they have the spay surgery, they are not instantly and immediately out of heat. It takes awhile for those homones to go away and the discharge slowly stops too. In the mean time, she is giving off the scent of being in heat which is driving your unneutered dog insane.

Is there any way a friend could take you Min Pin for a week or so until the scent is lessened on the female?

You could board him at your vet for a week or so, and get him neutered while he is there? That would reduce his chances of having prostate problems and testicular and anal tumors that are common in unneutered male dogs.

Technically dogs have venereal diseases too, so your Min Pin could contract it is she is positive for it.

I would imagine he is driving her nuts and may overdo it himself, and he is not young.

Yeah, also if he was NOT fixed yet and lived for 9 years i guess there is no other risk i mean when people say they could get cancer and stuff like that. I mean your dog is a good example nothing happend to him in 9 years and thats great.

Ok here's the update. I have reduced the mounting greatly by letting him know its not ok.

New problem: Jealousy

He got very jealous this morning when I brought her out of the crate. He even attacked twice. I seperated them. Everyday she gets more affectionate and excited about being here. So the jealousy is going to be an issue for a while. Im going to try and make sure he gets the most attention for a while. Im hoping it will eventually work out.
