Bulldog in heat??

Good morning all! I'm new to the forum and look foward to lots of new doggie friends! I have an old english bulldog, 4-5 yrs old, female purebred. Her name is Layla and she is my BABY!!!! She ran away from a breeder/puppy mill and was found wondering. The breeder came looking for her and said "oh well she was getting too old anyway I'll just start breeding one of her daughters". They let me keep layla, and I would not let her go back there anyway! My question is her vulva is very swollen right now. It is very big to begin with and when I adopted her she had just finished nursing her last litter, that was about 3-4 mths ago. There is no telling how many litters she has had already and she also has a c-section scar. The people I got her from did not give me any reccords or seem to care about her at all, just that she was there to breed. I love her so much, she is my best bud!!! I just want to make sure she is ok. I'm assuming this is her heat. When I first got her I took her for a complete vet check up and she was perfect but I'm a new bulldog mommy and worried about her. Any advice would be great and I look foward to chatting with every one!!

Kyllobernese is an unknown quantity at this point
Re: Bulldog in heat??

It is the right time frame for her to be coming back in season. It is a shame you did not get her spayed a month or so after you got her and you could have avoided having to wait now till she has finished her season.

How long do I need to wait now? I was trying to give her time to adjust and her milk from the last litter just dried up about 2 weeks ago. Is that normal?

Shalva will become famous soon enough
Re: Bulldog in heat??

you could have spayed but you didnt.... its oke your reasoning makes sense

from the onset of bleeding the heat cycle lasts a month (roughly) some dogs finish sooner some later
in either case keep her speperated for a month and never unsupervised.... then once you finish out the month then wait 3 more months and have her spayed....

Re: Bulldog in heat??

Both Layla and my chinese crested are females. They are also inside ONLY dogs, when we go potty or for a walk they are on a lead, so I'm not worried about her getting preggers. She just seems to have been through alot and I do plan on spaying her as soon as she is ready. By the way my crested is spayed.

I have nothing to add on the heat/spaying topic, but I just had to say...

WHAT A CUTIE she is! She looks so cozy in that picture. How lucky that she found you and is learning to enjoy life.
