Cephalexin Dosage?

My Shar pei has some skin allergies but I really don't have the money to take her to the vet. She had the same problem last year and the vet prescribed Cephalexin and it cleared it right up. I just ordered 250mg of fish flex which is Cephalexin, but I don't remember the proper dosage the vet told me last year. She is a 4 year old 40lb shar pei. Also how long should I give her this?

Also I put frontline on her the last 2 summers and I notice these skin problems 2 months after I apply frontline. Could this be a allergic reaction to frontline?

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Cephalexin Dosage?

shar peis are known for skin issues.....

we can't give out a dosage and while I know others who do use fish antibiotics for their dogs.... you need to get the proper dosage from a vet .

I have a copy of my invoice from the vet last year and he perscriped 500MG of Cephalexin, but I can't remember if I gave her 2 pills a day or just one. I heard you should give a dog 15mg per 10 lbs, but I really want to be sure.

Then you need to contact your vet. The internet is not a place to go to for diagnosis and dosing.

Re: Cephalexin Dosage?

Call your vet and ask. Get a Merck vet manual. If you don't know what you are doing, you shouldn't be giving any drugs to your dog.

This is my old vet when I lived in FL. I asked because I figured there were some vet's who belong to this forum or someone else used cephalexin on a 40lb dog that I could use for reference..

Re: Cephalexin Dosage?

Even if your living across the country you can and should still call your vet. You could also try calling any local vet, but I doubt they would give you the dosage without seeing the pet first. There's also a high likelyhood that your vet in florida would want to see your pet first, esspecialy considering it was a year ago that the original Rx was done, but at least you have a doctor patient relationship with them.

I get the impression from your last post that you have moved since last year and don't live anywhere near your previous vet. If this is the case then it's extremely important that you find a new vet in your area and start to establish a relationship with them.

Also this is a fourm of dog lovers, not vets, though many of us myself included do or have worked in the vet industry. I don't belive we have any vets here and even if we did they still could not diagnose or prescribe medicine to a dog they've never seen. The internet is not a substitue for proper medical care.
