Is it possibly a slipped disc, not just a pulled muscle?

I had another thread about sammi having some back pain. One of the responses got me concerned that it could actually be a disc, and not just a pulled muscle, as the vet diagnosed.

I'll give you some background. Last Saturday Sammi jumped off the bed and yelped when doing so. She then proceeded to yelp anytime we tried to pick her up, or rub down her back. By Sunday night she was feeling better after we iced her back. Friday morning, the same thing happened. We took her to the vet, and he said it's a pulled muscle and gave us Deremaxx. She is feeling much better now, but I am concerned that this will happen again.

She is 55 lbs and 10 months old. Is a slipped disc common in this young of a dog?

How is a slipped or bruised disc diagnosed? Does it show up in an X-ray? Something I was reading said it does not, so that's why I'm asking that.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
