allergic reaction to antibiotics

Hi i have a friend who took his purebred cocker to a groomer and while the dog was there they nicked him. They gave him an antibiotic for the cut. I do not know (didn't think to ask) if it was topical or oral. Anyway, the dog started to become listless after this and my friend took him to the vet where the dog passed out. In running tests they found that the cocker has a problem that sometime occurs with the breed where they have some time of immune deficiency problem and the antibiotic set it off. From now on he has to be careful not to have antibiotics given to him and vaccinations have to be some type of lower dose that won't cause him harm as well.

Has anyone else ever heard of this in purebred cocker spaniels?

Re: allergic reaction to antibiotics

I'm sorry to hear about your friend's dog. I think the groomer took a big risk (it's obvious) in treating the dog with antibiotics, unless they have a vet on site. They should have made the guardian aware of the "cut" and have him/her take the dog for treatment if needed. Nowadays you can't tell which dog is going to have a reaction and to what.

They can't lower the dose of a vaccine, but they can treat him beforehand so he does not have a reaction.

I hope the dog has a speedy recovery.

Thank you for the reply Patt. He was groomed at a national chain and they did have a vet on site, but the poor thing didn't show any symptoms until he was home for a while.
