Mali puppy diarrhea

I got a Malamute puppy three weeks ago. The breeder wanted me to switch him to Iams puppy, but she did not give me very much of the food that he had been on while with her. So he inevitably got diarrhea when we changed foods. After a week I went to the vet. He gave metronidazole, which seems to be giving him stomach trouble. Sometimes he throws it back up. And we still have diarrhea. He eats great, and acts fine otherwise. Could it just be that he is not going to ever tolerate the Iams? Should I try to change his food again? I am afraid that is might make him worse.

Re: Mali puppy diarrhea

I would make an appointment with the vet. And take along a FRESH stool specimen so they can check for parasites.

I agree, diarrhoea could be as simple as the change in food, but it could also be symptomatic of many other much worse things. Puppies go downhill fast. Vet visit time.

Re: Mali puppy diarrhea

I agree that you should take a stool sample into the vet to be sure. Its a simple procdure that only cost $6.00 at my vet.

That being said, my puppy was on Iams and had constant loose stools. When I finally did some research on differant puppy foods I decided to switch to Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lovers Soul and it turned firm right away. You might just need to switch to another brand.

Re: Mali puppy diarrhea

Sorry, I should have told you that we have already done. Actually we had that stool analysis done twice. It was clean.

I would either go back to feeding what the breeder was feeding or a bland diet until your pups system calms down. After that I would switch him to a better food. JMHO
